Do you think there may be a few "duplications" in such an online petition list, after all you only need to enter your name, your email address and your city in the petition on the above web site?

I wonder what verification steps are taken before a petition like this is presented to Parliament?

Duplications would also occur in an offline petition. An online petition would not contain signatures so I really doubt it meets the requirements for acceptance by the clerk of the house of parliament. It can be presented to an MP and by an MP all the same tho.

So a petition calls for Hosking's to be sacked.

Assuming he IS sacked as a result of public opinion, he'll still be on Newstalk ZB, voicing HIS opinion there.

And IF he is sacked by this petition, and his replacement is just as bad, if not worse, will there be another petition calling for the sacking of the replacement, or will the people behind the petition take aim at Mediaworks\TV3's 'Story'?

And if he is sacked, because TVNZ fold to public pressure, does he have a case of unfair dismissal? Surely, if there aren't any cases of misconduct, or he isn't performing in his role, TVNZ will find themselves in a legal battle with him.

In the meantime, all this petition will be doing is boosting Seven Sharps rating as people tune in to see what the fuss is about.

And as others have said, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Simple really. If you don't like him\share his views, don't watch.

Sheesh.

He was hired for the same reason Henry was hired. They are shock jocks that divide opinion by saying controversial things that aren't Pc. It is solely about ratings and advertising. Same goes for the other content tvnz is now serving up which is insulting to ones intelligence. The petition is a waste of time. The problem is that people on Tv have a lot of exposure and the potential to influence. Just look at what had happened with Trump, we don't want to see that sort of thing happen here.

Yes, certainly recommended reading! I sometimes wonder whether people who exercise their rights to "free speech" fully realise the rights of other people who may be "unfairly" adversely affected by their comments. Perhaps this is why some politicians are prepared to say more within a parliamentary debate than they would "outside the house"!

Having said that, I think the public is fairly tolerant of broadcasters who may from time to time express controversial views on various topics. I guess it's part of their job to keep programs vibrant and interesting and to get people thinking and arguing about the issues of the day!

TVNZ made $12.7 M in the 6 months to December (although this will be in a continual fall as the market fragments)

TVNZ is no longer subject to a charter which might dictate it's behaviour on matters of "public good", but I'd argue that there is a case for the government, as the effective owner of TVNZ, to be asking questions as to the bias or otherwise of some of its presenters, and also to be questioning the merits of providing programming such as Seven Sharp, given that it is essentially a soapbox for a lone privileged, middle aged, white man who's morals are clearly non-existent to the point that he's happy to spew forth all sorts of vomitous crap for the highest bidder.

This in SPITE of the possibility that said paid-for televised chunky bits are making money.

I think the government need to get rid of tvnz pretty soon as it no longer fits into the definition of a public broadcaster. I have a question. Apart from these platinum funded programs on at of peak times when did you last see a political being interviewed in-depth about a topic. I don't recall seeing anything since Campbell live disappeared. I don't think that is good for democracy. Hoskings is a good interviewer but he doesn't do any of that on the Seven sharp program/ fluff show.

No. Their job is to get people to listen to ads. To do that, they need to provide something "vibrant and interesting". Or at least something that appears to be "vibrant and interesting". If there is no issue of the day, they'll make something up.

i.e. it's verbal (oral? aural?) click-bait.

An interesting thought, so we want freedom of speech to curb freedom of speech! Now aren't we all glad that we live in a country that allows such freedom of expression!

Most shows have an opinionated provocative person and a kind, moderate person. Usually the opinionated provocateur is male and the reasonable moderate is female. There is banter. The remainder of the cast take the female's side in all humorous controversies. The female rolls her eyes in warm disdain at her exuberant male co-host. She keeps the show on track while he is chaos personified.

Over on seven sharp, different names, same characters.

On Paul Henry, ditto.

When Paul Henry was on Breakfast, ditto

Sports Cafe, Crowd goes wild, Ice TV ... Punch and Judy ...

If you listen to the Edge in the morning, Jayjay and Dom, and the other guy that noone remembers the name of, it is exactly this. They are all just characters. The problem is when it makes it into something that is supposed to be 'News'.

In NZ we are very badly let down by news organisations, to the point where I think it is verging on affecting democracy, simply due to the lack of indepth journalism. The good programs have all but disappeared. One of these programs had a big part of getting an innocent man out of jail in NZ. Politicians these days don't have to answer serious indepth questioning by the media, they are cut down to small sound bites in the new program. It is only going to get worse when these news organizations merge. Radio NZ is really the last man standing, and their funding by the government isn't exacly great.

We get what we pay for. In my case I pay nothing for the news I access ... TVNZ, TV3, Stuff, herald online, facilebook twatter ... all free and mostly rubbish.

Sky News is actually pretty reasonable quality but unfortunately an Australian news programme.
