You are kidding, right?.........

Not at all. Networkn challenged me to name some names so he could dis on whoever I chose so I named some. These are all competent journalists and there are plenty more in this country. The problem isn't a lack of capable professionals, but a lack of opportunities for them to exercise their abilities. Jobs in traditional media are shrinking and those that remain force good people into dumbed-down straightjackets where they are compelled to act like imbeciles. There are plenty of serious journalists who would love to be able to do serious journalism but the opportunities are not there and they still have to eat. Our media are in a dire state and the implosion of Mediaworks is only one symptom of that.

Yeah, see that doesn't wash with me in the slightest. I consider a good journalist one who has principles and standards. You are saying the "good journalists" are being forced to act like idiots, but I'd argue you can't force someone to do what they don't want to do. No employer could "force" me to drop my standards and principles for a pay packet, I'd rather go and do something else for a living.

An apt description of the ghastly Campbell.

I had the misfortune to hear him last night (on the radio not the TV) still banging on about Pike River in the mistaken belief that the cause he champions has any more legs on it than a fish.

As is always the case with a thread like this, people voice a range of opinions but that is all they are. Saying you dislike a particular interviewer says nothing about the quality or otherwise of that interviewer, it only indicates your personal preference. I can't stand Paul Henry. I find him absolutely odious. I happen to like John Campbell, who I think has done important work. That is my opinion. You have yours.

I can understand how you may have found her rude , but the suggestion this a "non story" is, to use your words, beyond me...

I should have been more specific.  The whole abuse thing is obviously newsworthy and important.  But the interviews I heard seemed to be purely devoted to picking fault with how the Minister chose to deal with a recommendation made by the ex judge, ie whether to set up an independent inquiry.  There seemed to be twenty minutes worth of picking apart the words used and trying to prove the Minister to be foolish/dishonest/uncaring, all in a rude, interruptive manner.  That to me is not news, it is an attempt to score political points against the government

Oh for goodness sake.  That is the story.

We expect politicians to do something. They don't want to do anything really - except to not upset the apple cart / status quo - especially when that might cost $$$.

"Doing something" was to form a panel, the Minister gets the report - then does nothing with it.  Then invents a figure of 3.5% from somewhere, to suggest that they've now got an action plan to do something about the "minor" issue that's been uncovered.  The chair of the panel points out that stupidity - and gets slammed by the Minister for being a judge "interfering" with government.

The Minister disagrees with you - she's downplaying the report as not being obviously newsworthy and important.

How many NZ tv journalists have won international awards for their journalism (rather than home-grown self-congratulatory backslapping ones)?

How many media here have created opportunities to enable journalists to do the kind of work that would make it possible for them to win international awards? We live in the land of media mediocrity.

New Zealand awards hold higher value than offshore awards. Who cares if someone wins a British or American "home grown" award.

Well, I disagree.  I think a forensic analysis of the reaction to a report is not such a big story.

Yes, there were serious problems 40-50 years ago.  Those who complained are being apologised to and compensated.  The fact that the government's response is not 100% aligned with the recommendations of a report is, to me at least, not worthy of such coverage.

I also think you have put words in the Minister's mouth with your last statement.  And I think you're showing your bias by repeating the disingenuous statement that 3.5% is "invented from somwhere".  The minister explained this yesterday and I explained it above; you, just like the annoying presenter, have chosen not to listen

An international award is not a home grown award from another country. NZ awards hold no value at all - being the best in a tiny pool of mediocre journalists hardly has higher value than a Pulitzer, for example.

Depends on ones attitude, I believe that NZ stands above most others.

A truly good journalist would probably recognise that and be working for the BBC or some other world class news organisation I imagine.

Good one. Sadly that is what causes some of the problems we have - the belief that we are already doing it the best it can be done..

3.5% had made claims.  That excludes those who'd died or not made claims.  But that's the figure the Minister chose to use as a headline.  She also stated that there's no evidence that there was a systemic problem. There was a systemic problem.  You're choosing to believe the most biased of all - a government minister.

Sure, we do, but in my opinion, not Journalism. In sport we would be one of the top countries in the world. We also lead in Child Abuse, and a bunch of not so impressive things too :)

I miss the good old days of Andrea D'audrey and the like. Paul Holmes could be an utter prat, but he put people like John Campbell to shame.

It's a different world.  The concept of conducting an interview where the interviewee isn't demanding to be given a list of questions to be vetted, to prepare answers under the guidance of trained experts, to counter with a list of topics which can't be mentioned, in a competitive market where the interviewee is a celebrity of some kind, politician or public figure, well, you take the interview on their terms - or someone else gets the interview, the viewers, and the adverting revenue.
