me too, one of the few times where the movies generally improve on the books and don't just introduce alien mice creatures (total recall).

Without giving away too much plot, it initially revolves around an exceptionally talented and dedicated young female naval commander as her star nation fights to avoid being gobbled up by another larger, corrupted star nation. I cannot recommend it highly enough, I first read it via the Baen free library and ended up buying at last count 20+ of the books in paperback I liked the universe that much, and I'm a a "pirate all the things" kind of guy.

I definitly blame Heinlein for me ending up not being able to find a political party I like because I have a total mishmash of political views and he was a very influential author in my youth. As for them being well written stories, well plenty of people believe in the Bible and that's the best selling fiction novel of all time :-P On that note I don't think anyone's mentioned L Ron Hubbard.. I think Scientologists are batsh*t crazy but I enjoyed reading Battlefield Earth & the Mission Earth series.

Totally agree on the movie being different, it was done deliberately by Verhoven as he objected to the books "facist" utopia and refused to write the movie as anything other than a total parody. It ranks up there for me was one of the worst book to movie adaptations of all time.. Which brings me to another author I don't think I've seen either, David Brin. I enjoyed The Postman as a book but the movie was godawful. His Uplift series is well worth reading too.

Unrelated to any of the above comments, but Philip José Farmer's Riverworld series is worth a read too.

I haven't read that one, but I have read both those authors individually. Stephen Baxter does very good hard SF, and Alastair Reynolds very readable Space Opera. I'll have to keep an eye out for that collaboration.

If anyone has the Dragonfall 5 series of books from their childhood I'd love to borrow or buy them for my own kids

Read "We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis Taylor" over Summer. Thought it was really well written.

 

I saw that on a lot of lists so started it the other day and am about halfway through now.

Quite light and entertaining, and am enjoying it.

World War Z - the book, not the execrable movie - is the sequel to The Zombie Survival Guide. They are written be Max Brooks - Mel Brooks' son - and are excellent zombie survival horror books.

That's a bit like saying you're reluctant to read the Bible in case it spoils The Life of Brian!

The books are so much more detailed and will fill in so many blanks that the show leaves. They are also very good.

Interesting you say there is so much more detail in the books. I normally find that to be the case when comparing novels to TV/movies, but in the case of Leviathan Wakes (which I did start reading after season 1 of the show finished) I actually thought the TV series seemed a little more fleshed out compared to the book (although I only got about half-way through the book).

I'm sure they are excellent books, but didn't seem to add a lot to what I'd already seen in the show.

Since almost every good show gets cancelled before it's time, I'm sure I'll end up reading them so I can continue the story. I may read the ones that the show has already covered, but I don't think I'll read ahead of the show.
