Interesting move by the BBC. High risk pulling major change like that on loyal fans.

Previously the Time Lord civilisation was portrayed as being comprised of Time Lords (male) and Time Ladies (female). Up until recently, with the revelation that Missy was in fact the latest regeneration of The Master, there had been no precedent set either way if they could change gender.

Their physical form was never that of human male or human female, Time Lords just happen to look externally very much like humans.

I would imagine that the moniker "Time Lady" will be quietly dropped, and they will go with Time Lord for both genders moving forward.

surfisup1000: It certainly smacks of PC to me.

It diminishes the integrity of the dr who universe. Dr who was just a fun geeky apolitical TV series... Now they have gone all deep and philosophical and complicated. Although to be fair they have been going in this direction for a few years now.

Now there a all these questions out there... Is dr who gay/ bi or straight? Dr who was a geeky white male with fun gadgets. No longer.

Is it all about the modern hatred of white males? Certainly seems to be a theme lately.

Wouldn't be surprised if woody Allen were the next director.

Does anyone care about tradition these days?

Maybe it will be ok though, even if I don't agree with the underlying pc'ness.

Dr Who isnt human, and has never really tried to conform to human sterotypes as a character, so the idea of a fixed gender and having a fixed gender identity doesnt fit. I have always thought that the whole idea of dr who, was to think outside the box.

I’ve been waiting for a female doctor for some time, there are endless storylines especially since the new actor can indroduce a fresh perpective to things.

It seems to me that some people who are complaining are doing so because they may be uncomfortable with the idea of equality (rather than they just dont like change) - in that the gender of a character, may not be all that important given the story being told. My favorite fictional character/super heroine happens to be Wonder Woman, so for me it is awsome there is now another character played by a woman and I see it as a refreshing change, and it means as a male fan of the series, I get the opportunity to see something different.

I can.

What makes it more unsettling for me is that many who have made their comments in this thread are too young to have the memories I have of being taken to the Odeon cinema like I was in 1965 or so by their grandmother to watch Dr Who and the Daleks. Terrified I was!

Peter Cushing played that role so well. But there again, we didn't have the internet to tell us what we really should have believed or felt.

Either way, perhaps it is time for a gender change. After all 50 years, even in the age of a Time Lord / Mistress is but a mere speck on the horizon of what is possible.

I think some people are reading too much into as well, which may be the cause of some of the negativity. I don't believe they are making some great statement about gender identity with this change. I don't see it as a Time Lord having no fixed gender, or being "gender fluid". When they regenerate it is not just a physical thing; they are essentially a new person, personality and all. So it is perfectly fine to have all the previous Doctors being physically male and identifying as male, but after a regeneration being female and identifying as such.

MORE JACK HARKNESS!!! Alternatively, Jack Harkness for the 14th incarnation of The Doctor. In other news, I think I possibly liked Torchwood more than Doctor Who. DW tries to be family friendly. Torchwood did not; and any hypothetical universe with Daleks in it, is not family friendly, nor would a real adversary of the Daleks get more than half a syllable out before being vapourised, let alone be able to destroy an entire Dalek invasion fleet just by talking at them.

But I digress... Doctor Who, I loves it.

I enjoyed Torchwood more than DR Who - it was a bit grittier/meaner/darker. I was surprised it didnt really take off. Had some really good actors in it too.

It's been interesting to read the reactions from people on this thread, along with those across the world. I don't think anyone was truly surprised at the vitriol that emerged from some people, though it's very disappointing that so many people can see past their own prejudice.

Personally, I've haven't been this excited for a new Doctor in a long time. When they announced David Tennant, with far less hype than was given to Peter Capaldi (which had a one-hour special devoted to it), I remember feeling "meh", but he turned out to be fantastic. Similarly with Matt Smith. I think that was because they were both largely unknowns to me. Peter Capaldi, who I knew well from The Thick of It and In the Loop, made my eyebrows raise, and I struggled for a long time to separate him from his previous roles, which made it hard for me to see him as the Doctor. Its been better with recent seasons, but I think that's why I'm so stoked to see Jodie Whittaker cast in the role. Other than Attack the Block and an episode of Black Mirror, I haven't seen her in anything, and both were long enough ago that I don't remember much of them or her. So I'm really looking forward to seeing her as the Doctor, because for me it's a return to the excitement that DT and MS brought to the role - an "unknown", putting her own spin on the character.

I knew this a while back after an interview I heard on a podcast, where they sort of let it slip. I find it somewhat unwatchable these days anyway, as it is really made for kids. I would have liked to see a more adult version, like the movie a good number of years back.

Now an adult version with the new Dr Who really would be worth seeing ...

I enjoyed Jon Pertwee (my Fav) and Peter Davison as the Doctor the most. I never saw Christopher Eccleston but I imagine he was excellent.

Tom Baker then John Pertwee. They are really my only Doctors. I also preferred it when it was a series of 12 (I think) 30 minute episodes telling one story over all 12.

I saw an interesting comment on a UK site re this particular casting where someone wondered how a female doctor would get on if the story was set in a time when a woman's opinion was about equal to that of a horse and whether the BBC would completely re-write medieval history to accommodate their casting choice!
