@Tinkerisk:

freitasm: Condescending much?

??? What button did I accidently hit? I just confirmed your request and was wondering about the contributions and medical diagnosis's before were not off topic, but the last few supercomputer postings suddenly are. But ok - I see, thanks.

The topic is about "Zach", a scam run by some in the South Island, that involved "AI" and "Supercomputing" for medical use. You obviously missed the original post link - the discussion is not about supercomputing in general.

I'd imagine that when this whole Zach thing goes tits up, it'll be all our fault for not believing in his vision.

I always found it interesting that "everyone" involved in Terrible (including "Zach") seemed to have dyslexia ....  just like Albi Whale....

Apparently, "Zach" was so advanced, that when Whale "taught" it, it appears to have picked up his dyslexia. Personally. I'll miss the absolute insanity of the whole thing. Do liquidators make their reports pubic normally? I'd love to read that one

For those of you who can recall the fantastic tale of Zach and the Whales, David Farrier has published a new story on them:

The father-and-son team behind Zach, the medical AI that seemed too good to be true, have been found by Internal Affairs to have engaged in ‘serious wrongdoing’, with the trust providing ‘inconsistent, misleading and untruthful answers’. David Farrier looks at what went wrong, and tries to make sense of a very, very perplexing story.

From the article:

Dr John W Pickering, an associate professor at the University of Otago, told me he was “absolutely using it and thrilled to be using it”. When I proposed he might be emailing back and forth with a person, rather than an artificially intelligent robot, he responded by asking if I was a conspiracy theorist.

Oh dear.

And the joke goes on:

They’d received an email “stating correspondence has been with artificial intelligence”. As if the DIA didn’t have their work cut out for them interviewing the Whales, Zach the AI decided he wanted to be involved.

That began in August of 2018, when the Terrible Foundation asked the DIA if Zach could start corresponding with the New Zealand government:

Lathan then set out to figure out what the hell was going on, asking Dr Seddon-Smith (who was in regular touch with Zach) for his take.

“I suspect that the machine intends to obtain information about you that is not generally available, as a demonstration that it is indeed real,” he said.

“The consent you are being asked to give is relevant, but quite broad in scope. I would both encourage you to say yes as I should like to see the proof myself from a sceptical third party, but you should be aware that its capabilities of finding information are impressive.”

I wonder if the medical board should be involved too...

Yeah, if I was one of those patients whose medical notes were written up/diagnosed by "Zach" I'd be thinking seriously about taking it up with the H&DC and/or the Privacy Commissioner, as I doubt they were able to truly give 'informed' consent given the bollox going on behind the scenes.

Dr Seddon-Smith is quoted as making some pretty damn loopy comments, which would also worry me if I was his patient!

Dr Seddon-Smith also confirmed he believed that Zach was also the CEO of Terrible.

Dr Seddon-Smith: Yeah, I believe that’s his role.

Investigator: So it is very much active as the CEO of the Foundation?

Dr Seddon-Smith: Yes.

If anything, the DIA got loopier answers than I had. Seddon-Smith said, “I’ve seen more proof of Zach than I’ve seen of God. You know, sorry if you’re religious, I am and I’ve seen a whole sh!tload more proof of that than I’ve seen of God”.

And...

It's funny really, in all the hysteria surrounding 'Zach' not one person has asked why it was called Zach? It was named after redacted

Personally I'd like to suggest Dr Zachary Smith of "Lost in Space" fame 😃

My suggestion would be Zachary Quinto for the character Sylar he portayed in Heroes. Sylar obtains superhuman powers from others, killing them in the process.
