Some news is more up to date than online. Such as crossing live to a reporter on the spot. Also it doesn't bombard me with videos playing by themselves, and when I go to pause that interference, I have to hover the cursor to create a pause option. I also don't get half the screen taken over by an ad that I have to close. I find online often very intrusive on some sites

 

No, you just get the whole screen taken over for 4 minuites every 6 mins or so. internet ad's are so less intrusive than anything broadcast.

I do prefer to be able to pick and choose which news topics I look into though, so I can follow news that is interesting to me.  Not sure that's an option on the nightly TV news yet though.  :-)

 

The "crossing live" thing is a bit hit or miss.  Seems to be trending towards having someone live regardless of the actual need to do so.  What benefit is there for having a reporter standing outside a building (courthouse for example) in the evening reporting on something that may have happened in that building during the day. 

 

There's a lot of personal preference in our media consumption though.

 

"im coming to you live from down the road from where something important happened earlier today. Those police there are blocking the road while an investigation happens in the building within the cordon. I have with me a local witness to the earlier commotion" - "Yes, I was inside making my evening cup of tea and there was an almighty ruckus outside! I didnt dare go and have a look but I heard from ethyl that there was a man there. It was all very serious"

"Thanks Dave, and what do you see there where you are?"

"Well there are 3, perhaps 4 police cars here outside the house. They are going both in and out of the house carrying boxes which we think contain evidence of the earlier events that occured there"

"And now back to you in the studio to repeat what was just said in the dramatic voice beside a picture of a police car"

I've not seen the 60 minute period being 20 minutes news and 40 minutes ads. Ads are quickly FF through though.

At least TV Journalist are better than news hub or nz herald at least they are more factual as you can see moving things.
I would rather watch what you described then read the dribble that's online these days.

Most of it seems to be dribble, regardless of the medium. I still miss TVNZ 7, though I don't have much faith that RNZ 2.0 will re-create that. These days I get my regional news from ABC and my world news from a range of sources. I only watch NZ news for purely local stuff. I don't bother skipping the commercials any longer, I just hit the mute button. Especially when Smiths City, Repco, JB, and Godfrey's start screaming at me. HN used to be the worst but they seem to have toned it down. These days even they don't sound like they believe in their endless sales anymore.

A lot of people seem to think that TVNZ is a public service broadcaster. It is not. TVNZ is a commercial broadcaster that happens to be owned by the state and, like Fairfax, NZME and Mediaworks, it is struggling to deliver quality content due to commercial pressures.

RNZ is a genuine public service broadcaster, and Newsroom is independent and operates quite a different business model from the other mainstream outlets. Thankfully these two are in a good position to deliver the sort of content that the outlets mentioned above are no longer able to.

Lias: Content should only exist if its commercially viable. If NZ content isn't commercially viable, the taxpayer should not be wasting money propping it up.

Sounds like a great way to kill a culture.
