Best movie - Bad Santa

Now that's my idea of a good Christmas movie!

It's not that I'm a Grinch (as I love Christmas), but I find most Xmas-themed movies and music saccharine and tacky; Bad Santa is hilarious, but I've never bothered to watch the sequel which, by all accounts, is dismal.

As a side note, I have to say that moving to NZ killed Christmas for me. It's such a non-event here and everything just feels wrong. It's also irritating because everything shuts for so long that you can't get any work done!

Totally agree. Been here over 12 years now and the feeling hasn't changed. May be something to do with the fact Christmas is tied in with the summer holidays.

We had a mid winter Christmas one year and that was better.

Best movie - Bad Santa

Best carol - anything from Phil Spector's Christmas album.

Yes, we have done the mid winter thing too.

Most annoying though is the ludicrous compulsory closure. In effect, NZ works an 11 month year, which must have a measurable effect on the economy.

I would have to go with Fairytale of New York as my absolute favourite.

...

And Die Hard is the best Xmas movie...

Same.

Also partial to Snoopy's Xmas, Grandma got run over by reindeer Boney M's cover of Drummer Boy and  White Xmas.  I'm hoping the last one hasn't been adopted by the alt-right laughing

I am not a Christmas person but I am also not a grinch. Those who get something from it, as many do, should certainly be able to enjoy it in the way they see fit. When I had young children in my life, Christmas mattered to me because it mattered to them. Seeing their excitement and joy was truly what Christmas was all about to me. Now that they have grown and have families of their own, I have withdrawn from it all because it isn't really my thing.

My personal favourite Christmas song was always 'All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth'. I thought it was wonderfully clever.

For those who prefer traditional Christmas celebration and music, I highly recommend the Christmas special that André Rieu did a few years ago. It is really beautiful and moving, a perfect rendition of what most people would imagine a traditional northern hemisphere Christmas to be.
