We use a Zip toaster bought from Briscoes for about $16. Does much better toast that the $$$ Delonghi one my mum has at her place.

So when you're talking Dualit toaster you're talking about this: http://www.dualit.co.nz/product/dualit-newgen-4-slice-toaster ?

Yup - that is the one I am after and the updated version of the one that has served my friends well for so very many years

I've had the Magimix see through toaster for 5 years. Best purchase ever! Every other toaster is old tech.

Ages ago, before moving here, I had a toaster (Philips, I think) that had an IR sensor in that was supposed to 'read' the brown-ness of the toast surface so that if you set it to, say, level 4 and then used a different or frozen bread, it would alter the timing so that you still got the same level of toasting. Never seen one since.

Probably because it was a piece of crap. What is such a huge problem about just monitoring the toast, and putting it back in if it isn't done? There is an awful lot of gimmickry for its own sake in today's world. Alexa, make some toast. Dark on one side, not on the other. Don't forget the butter.

Sheesh!

I like Dualit because you can easily just lift the toast and look!

As far as the one I mentioned above goes, I think it worked well enough in general but I cannot recall for sure whether it performed better than an average toaster in terms of what it was trying to do differently.

I also like the conveyor belt toasters they have in some hotels. We had them in the dining room at one school I was at and (as teens we ate a lot of toast..!) it was great - you could catch 8 slices and then pile butter on top, let it melt, lift the top slice and drain the melting butter onto the next one and so on. Brilliant!

We have a Breville 2 Slice Toaster. It's been reasonable but has some issues now plus with 4 people in the house who eat toast, 2 slices is a bit of a pain.

Things we like the the "lift and look" button, the defrost feature, though that one doesn't get a lot of use. It does toast reasonably evenly, however it's not perfect. It has a crumpet feature, though I am not sure I've ever noticed it before, but would use it if we did. Something that did Fruit Toast well would be good. The issue with our current one, is the doneness slider seems messed up, barely touch it, and it jumps a whole segment and it can be hard to estimate how long it will take to cook a particular bit of bread.

We don't really care about colour, but prefer black or silver, functionality is the most important thing. Don't mind spending for the right thing, but not looking to mortgage the house to buy some designer nonsense for the sake of the design.

Except for that prick that always shows up and just takes the next slice that comes out without bothering to put one in and wait for it.

Ah. We solved that at school by having a convention that you just kept feeding bread in at the top whilst catching at the bottom and the next boy did the same etc so effectively the toaster worked full time during breakfast and tea!

Fred99:

Consumer NZ review of the Dualit 2 slice $500 toaster:

Bottom line: This 2-slice toaster is a just OK performer and is OK to use. But it’s poor at producing consistently toasted bread and browning evenly, and just OK at toasting frozen bread.

I read that, and bought a Kitchenaid toaster instead.  It's okay / good, seems very well made, and was half the price.

Dualit - for people who like paying $500 for something you can buy for $25

WE have some <insert regular briscoes brand here> two slice thing.  It does the job.

But if you need more than two, or screwed up your timing of four pieces of toats as required for 4 dippy eggs, then we have one of those small brevile ovens that'll toast 4/5 slices more than adequately.
