Just a question in regard to our eligibility to apply for NZ citizenship. We got our residency visa 20 Dec 2016 I'm now on my permanent residency visa.

Our travel outside NZ history is 10 days between Feb & Marc 2017 and 15 days between Oct & Nov 2019 for a total of 25 days.

My understanding for the rules of 1,350 days in the 5 years preceding the citizenship application and 240 days in each of those 5 years is I'll just add 1,350 days and 25 days (Being Outside NZ) from 20 Dec 2016 which gives me a date of 25 Sept 2020.

Now on my 5th year from 20 Dec 2020 I'll just add 240 days which gives me a date of 17 Aug 2021. Is my computation of 18 Aug 2021 to lodge our citizenship application is correct and accurate?

Thank you in advance guys for your inputs.

I don't have the energy to check if your understanding of the rules and your maths is correct but I would think that they would calculate from the date when your application is assessed rather than when it was submitted.  Given the current backlog and a 10 month wait I expect you'll be fine to apply now.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I was thinking the same. However, as a current public sector employee myself I know how lazy these sectors are. I won't expect a lesser answer of "thank you for your contact. No we won't pay attention to you now. Please don't bother us again until you actually meet the criteria."

Having applied for citizenship recently I was positively surprised about how nice and helpful the people at DIA are (at least the Wellington branch), specially compared with the dehumanizing experience that is dealing with INZ.

I finally got some contact...

Got asked to submit a new photo - said it was to low quality but I suspect they probably just wanted a new one given the requirements state "Less than 6 months old" and my application was submitted 9 months ago.

Have applied for NZ citizenship early December 2020. No updates yet. The helpline people say due to covid-19 applications are taking a while to be processed. While few of my friends who have applied during lockdown have got their citizenship in couple of weeks.

What exactly happens once I apply and why it takes so long. Yes, the website says 7-12 months and I do not have any travel plans for this year. But would like to understand why it would take so long for some and 15 days for some.

Would like to know people's experiences on this.

Have you heard anything yet? We applied in early January 2021 and heard nothing yet.

You would not be correct. The period must immediately precede the date of submission (as per Citizenship Act 1977, sec 8(2)(b)(i)), not the date of assessment. As such, @Divhon88's math seems accurate, and August would be the earliest time to apply. Getting a rejection after waiting months for processing doesn't strike me as an ideal outcome - as well as "recklessly making a statement" being an actual offence.

@Kyanar, Yeah I would rather apply late than risk being rejected initially. I'm just in a rush to apply as I'm exploring our options to jump the ditch due to the housing crisis we have. In my opinion this unreasonable and unjustifiable up to 12 months delay in processing is a way to mitigate brain drain.

Would you think there will be implications when one breach the condition of applying citizenship and stay living in NZ for the next 12 months?

Maybe I'm misreading your post, but it sounds a bit like your reasons for wanting NZ citizenship aren't really in the right 'spirit' of doing so.

From this page:

Also, looks like the backlog is getting worse:

Citizenship is unconditional once granted - it can only be rescinded up until the grant date. Unlike Australia, New Zealand has no mechanism to remove a conferred citizenship.

The Act (sec 8(9)(a)) only requires you reside in New Zealand for the time between when you apply and when the citizenship is conferred. That's non-negotiable - move away during that time and your application is rejected.

That said, using New Zealand as a stepping stone to get to Australia is really not in the spirit of becoming a citizen of New Zealand, and Australia quite literally despises people that do that - it's the reason the SC444 visa is basically second class residency, which gives you none of the rights of an Australian resident, and no path to Australian citizenship.

10 years ago Peter Thiel got his NZ citzienship expedited...

with no need to meet the minimum stay requirements to be in NZ, no need to even be in NZ when he got his citizenship, no need to even stay in NZ

Ah the days when NZ citizenship was for sale

I was of the understanding that you could apply for citizenship after 5years from your residency visa. During those 5 years that's when the 240 in each year kicked in but that you could only apply after those 5 years. So in the OP's case that would be 20 Dec 2021.

Certainly that's the way a lot of government departments look at it for employment contracts eventually requiring citizenship to be granted as a condition of further employment.

And further to my post above. On the previously linked government website at https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports-citizenship-and-identity/nz-citizenship/requirements-for-nz-citizenship/presence-requirements/

The very first requirement is that you have been here 5 years
