Fusion would solve a LOT of things globally, but last time I watched doco on it, it was 50 years away. IIRC the fusion was just nanoseconds at the moment

Wait...

I'm sure I read something 50 years ago suggesting that fusion power generation would be 50 years away.

Oh - and it's still going to generate some radioactive waste.

Baby steps here earlier this month, described as being akin to the Wright Brother's first flight. Also acknowledged there is a long way to go. 50 years? Who knows, I think less. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/17/lawrence-livermore-lab-makes-significant-achievement-in-fusion.html

As for the waste. No matter what form of energy we have today there is some form of waste or a downside. It's just a matter of which one gives the best outcome over all.

TL:DR - Too hard + Too expensive + We have better lower cost alternative options = It will never happen in NZ.

This.

Almost zero western countries have nuclear plant building projects underway and the countries that do have state involvement, so its not just ill suited to NZ.  They are considered incredibly risky as the capital costs can be enormous.

Don't come in with logic. This thread is about middle aged men with their reckons.

Coincidentally it's always the same at BBQs. It's never the grandmothers or teenage girls who reach for the nuke card.

@Handle9 you are right if you mention the need for nuclear power around my wife or daughter and that person will hear about the Will Wheaton law.
My sons will agree with them.

OT but could you quote instead of doing an @ please? It gives two notifications and isn't necessary.

Quotes are hard limited so not a problem.

Not just this thread.

Hah - I'm not from the middle ages.

If you two want to have a stupid young man p*ssing contest trying to work out who can come up with the dumbest stereotype, I'm fine with that.

The idea that nuclear generation is needed right now this minute in NZ because climate change is extremely silly and bizarre. Can you think of some better reasons please.

If you didn't do anything because projects before of a similar nature cost more than expected then Noone should build houses, roads or convention centers, transport hubs and the list goes on forever

There are some valid reasons to not do nuclear power potentially but because it 'might' go over budget shouldn't be one of them.

hairy1: Building a Nuclear is quite a different proposition in New Zealand if you consider a Travelling Wave Reactor. I agree that building a Fukushima era Nuclear plant would be bananas. Travelling Wave Reactors are quite a different kettle of fish to those.

Building an entirely untested TWR would also be bananas if I'm not mistaken.

More correctly there are minimal reasons why nuclear power is attractive.

This is a picture of NZ's power generation make up at ~ 8.50am this morning

source : https://www.transpower.co.nz/power-system-live-data

With the green opposition to building more Dams (both for generation and water-supply) and for undertaking more gas exploration -  we are in for a major future supply issues as demand increases and gas production falls.

I have doubts the dream of solar will take up the gap as all people I know with roof solar seem to be averaging just under 40% network independence.
And I expect the greens will object to tidal flow/ under sea generation.

Yes EV vehicles will increase battery storage allowing off peak generation of renewables to be stored but I don't see this negates the need to start building  significantly more generation now in advance of when we will need it.
