My aunt working in a building in the CBD, got out of the building just before it collapsed. All of our family down there that we know have their cars crushed because they were parked next to or in buildings that collapsed. Stay strong everyone down there, our hearts are with you. Wish I could do more to help

We have 30+ staff in Chch, heard that most are fine but still waiting to hear back from others. One of the buildings has lost all its windows, everything been thrown around inc the stove in the staff kitchen. The manager I spoke to on Skype showed me the mess via his webcam....

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Was at lunch break at the Poly-tech in the common room. It was like nothing i have ever felt before it was going up and down and twisting. They told us to go home. Walking through the CBD it was chaos building collapsed everywhere, a bus had been buried under rubble. One of the major hotels is on a major lean. Gridlocked everywhere. Moorhouse Ave is flooded and there is water everywhere.

Several Zenbu Wi-Fi zones are still in operation in Christchurch but most are off-line. Map of zones here - orange still functioning [though there is no information on the state of the properties] and grey - off-line probably due to electricity failure but perhaps broadband lines too: http://www.zenbu.net.nz/new-zealand-wi-fi-hotspots-map.php Type "Christchurch" in the search box or zoom in. If people need communications that might help.

This from 2degrees:

The 2degrees network is running, but with some congestion. Please make essential calls only. Our thoughts are with the people of Christchurch this afternoon. Our network is operating, although we have several cell sites off the air at present. We have battery back up in place so calls and texts are getting through, but increased demand means congestion is likely.

Our staff, who thankfully have not been hurt, are working as fast as possible to get services restored.
Please avoid calling, texting and data use if it’s not essential.

This from Vodafone:

UPDATE: Tuesday 22nd February - 13:30.

There has been a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch.

It has affected power supply to a number of sites in the greater Christchurch area. A number of sites are currently operating on battery power so we are working with the local power company and Civil Defence to maintain service.

Vodafone recommends customers in the area keep calls to a minimum to keep the network clear for emergency services. If you can avoid making a call on the mobile network, please do so – try sending a TXT instead. However, if the situation is an emergency, don’t hesitate to make that call.

Our number one priority at the moment is to ensure our people are safe and we will keep you updated as the situation changes.
