hellonearthisman: I restored my netbook using the build in recovery system but hold F9 while booting.
There is a 5GB hidden partition that contains a Ghost image of the netbook, it was quick as easy to use and 20mins later I had a fresh machine again. After that, I discovered that the hidden partition is now visible, but not a problem.

Oh I tried Ubuntu 9.10 but it's not designed for the netbooks as the GUI for file requesters is too large for the screen, making it useless, maybe there is a Linux gui that is netbook friendly, I have not found it.

Did you try the standard ubuntu 9.10? or the UNR 9.10?
UNR is Ubuntu Netbook Remix, designed for netbooks and does things like turn off toolbars and shrink other graphical features so you can make the most of your limited screen real-estate.

I've got UNR installed, and once you set the display to the correct resolution its not too bad. Haven't quite got wireless networking sorted (drivers for the RT2860 Wifi are not included in UNR build), and i'm just about to reboot into UNR and turn on the multitouch functionality to make the trackpad work like it should.

I've got no dead pixels, noddy76, they should be able to fix that for you as it's not even 30days news.

I'll wait a week and see if anymore develop since it looks like i need at least one bright pixel, or 4 more dead pixels. And by then I should have my desktop back in action.. Its out of action due to an ASUS motherboard having an annoying problem with the front panel sound outputs.

Windows 7 Pro runs nicely. No issues at all and yes the battery life is great. Did you upgrade to 2GB RAM or are you running on the original 1GB?

Anyone know of a lightweight method of syncing a Nokia (in this case an E71)? Trying to find an effective alternative to Nokia's PC suite to sync mainly contacts and calendar.

I'd be very annoyed if I were HN as well. Go out of your way to deliver customers a product and all they're interested in doing is flogging it off for a profit.

Yes there have always those who purchase specials such as this with the sole intention of flicking the item off for a profit. I get annoyed too if I'm in a que to buy something personally and the profiteers are there ahead of me and I miss out, only to see them listed on Trademe later that day. It's the nature of the beast and the internet has just made it easy for them.

Thanks Mauricio and noddy76, I only tried the standard 9.10 and am now downloading the netbooks remix from citylink http://ftp.citylink.co.nz/ubun...
and City link is peered with Slingshot so I can get 500kBps even when my caps run out.

I also had a look at my HN recite and noticed 3 prices. There is the boxed price $799 and then the listed price $499 and then the price I paid $288

I wonder if some of the frontline staff really have no idea about this. One of them asked me how I got it for so cheap and he looked gutted lol.

Probably to stop staff from ordering truckloads themselves?

c71931f: any idea if the asus has a mini PCIe slot?for a 3g.. "card"?for mobile b/b via telecom and/or vodafone?

nah no slot, only a half sized slot that the mini wireless card is in :(

easiest way is to solder in a USB hub and connect an MF626 off that(with covering removed)

finally got mine today, they actually bought out an HP 1111TU initially, and I almost walked out with it until they realised they'd given me the wrong one. I wasn't really fussed either way but preferred the Asus due to the 6 Cell battery so was happy them swapped it back over.

I had a quick test of the ubuntu netbook and it only had the single touch pad and still had some menus requesters that could not e reached. Looks like it will be XP for now.

Does this make it unusable with ubuntu? Have you tried the normal version?

Its still useable, just that the multitouch functionality isn't there, you should still be able to turn on sidebar scrolling and stuff, but the multitouch would be really nice.

Not quite sure what hellonearth is talking about wrt the menu requesters. I didn't notice any problems other than the touchpad once i got the wireless up and running and the screen res set correctly.

Tried that, didn't work for me, possibile that I need to play with some of the values more, but to be honest I CBF, i want things to work out of the box.. I'll just buy a mouse and use that, or ditch ubuntu and stick with XP until somebody gets it to the point i can apt-get install synaptic-foo and have it work.
