By the time you mess around and come up with a way of filling or getting a bigger bottle with adaptors wouldn't you have just spent the money that you would have saved?

Seems like a waste of time to me.

Refills are $12 at countdown now, not bad since they last me 3-4 weeks and much cheaper and easier than buying sparkling water, but still much much more expensive than the cost of bulk CO2. If I could easily fill my own tanks or make a bulk system I would be interested, so long as it wasn't too messy or dangerous.

I haven't tried refilling the gas but what I have tried is putting the fizz back into Coke, my advice is don't try to put the fizz back into Coke the subsequent eruption of Cocoa Cola is very impressive and very very messy to clean up :)

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned the king of discounts store - ie Briscoes. Seriously, I think there would have to be little set-up cost and nil risk for me to consider wanting to refill the cyllinders myself - all that hassle when there's already a totally affordable source. We buy all our Sodastream stuff from Briscoes - refills, syrups and new bottles (the 500ml bottles are really useful).

Given that it's a strange week if they don't have at least 30% off all products on at least one day, it's typically the cheapest place to get all these products. I think we typically pay around $9.50 for a refill (having two gas bottles is useful - it means we always have a spare, and can always manage to get it replaced at the discounted price). Also - my wife came back the other week from picking up a refill from Briscoes with a loyalty card - x number of refills (4? 5?) and you got two free syrups.

Syrups come down to a good price at Briscoes too - see here. They too have a decent range, which has expanded over the couple of years since we purchased ours (though they got rid of ginger ale a year or so back, damn them!). More diet flavours as well, eg a diet ginger beer, but it's annoying that the NZ distributor doesn't bring in diet tonic.

As mentioned by others, the other thing is there's no restrictions as to what you can use for flavouring (other than the way you do it - eg trying to carbonate a drink that already has flavour; I'm sure most owners try this once just to confirm the disasterous results the manual claims are true!). For example, diet lime cordial makes a really tart and refreshing drink with carbonated water; mango pulp (probably most easily sourced in cans from Indian food stores) also works well.

Is this any help to you?

Still think a person would want to get co2 from a food grade re-filler. Paintball or w/e places that are not classified as food grade...the oils/lubricants they use might not be so good for you(?).

The US connector is different from the NZ connector. I did get one, I think it was Sodamod, had to send it back. They don't usually accept returns but they were good about it and did for me as it was unused.

I looked into the costs, buying a food grade cylinder, refills, etc. More info on page 3 of the thread. It turned out to not be worthwhile.
