OK, so I want to go to this movie bad. But I'm in a relationship and when I say 'Dear I want to go see Judge Dredd', my better half is going to say "Oh, what's Judge Dredd? I might want to come". Now, I know what Dredd is because I spent over 10 years in the 80's and 90's reading every 2000 AD from about prog 100 to somewhere over 500. I'm happy to have the company but how do you explain it to someone?
My ideas so far have been showing her the original movie and saying "This new film will be like that ... except a lot better and without Sly". Taking the short option, "He's like a cop ... but in the future and a lot more violent and fun". Or, and probably least sensible, taking the long option and explaining Dredd over several hours using terms like 'post-punk' and 'satire of Thatchers Britain'"
Thankfully the cinema is a 2 minute drive up the road from me and tickets are under $10 all the time, so Ill just say to the wife "im off to movies tonight, bye!" and go... unless she wants to see it as well then have to find babysitters...
Went to see this on Friday (Thanks to Geekzone for the tickets!! :) )
Both the Mrs and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We didn't have the best experience with the last 3D movie we saw - it gave me a headache and her major motion sickness (Avatar on the imax screen) but no problems with this one. Maybe the smaller screen or maybe just the fact that the 3D was more understated. Either way it worked pretty well.
As for the movie; really good. Not that I read much 2000AD back in the day, but it seemed pretty true to what I can remember. Ultra-violent, some decent funny bits, Karl doesn't take his helmet off at all and maintains the signature Dredd frown throughout. Well worth seeing IMO.
