What he said. The experience is something you must experience yourself and not rely on reviews. Also has anybody experienced the Dolby Atmos audio at the Embassy and if so, now was it?

I'm tempted to fly to Wellington just for this!

The HFR was particularly noticeable during the mass action sequences, which were very impressive indeed.
I guess in a way it's similar to comparing NTSC to PAL, NTSC is inferior in technical terms, but can look "nicer".
It would be interesting to see it in 2D but I'm very happy with the 3D HFR experience.

Not sure which version I will see yet. Probably 3D HFR. But I am one of these people who will pick up the flaws. There were a few dodgy effects in the LOTR, especially with the treepeople and the bluescreening which looked poorly done. But their Gollum animation work was top of class at the time.

Agree! I forgot to mention Gollum. The CGI was stunning, the best I've ever seen. Just amazing.

I watched it yesterday with the kids and have to say I am impressed. I watched it at Manukau, 3D with HFR

All the shudders of panning scenes have completely gone. There is something I can't quite put my finger on though as the scenes seemed to "pop" more and it felt almost a little bit cartoonish (that probably sounds a bit weird).

Anyway, I think it will be the way of the future. Everything is sooo smooth. Like butter. Ahhhh.....

Apparently the eagles talons at 48fps look like they are made out of that spotty material they use for gardening gloves, so I presume the higher framerate exposes all the tricks they make which are normally hidden at the normal frame rate. In order for it to look good at 48fps, I pressume they would have to invest a lot more in making the special effects more real and in greater detail. I have heard the bluescreen stuff looks really bad. At least it is downgradable. I have heard that at 24fps the movie is really good and on par with the LOTR.

I'm not expecting that seeing it in HFR 4k 3D will be "best" (although it might be?), but it will be at the maximum cutting edge that the producers intended. Hence why I want to see it in that format (although I expect afterwards I'll have to see it in "normal" to compare...).

I didn't really notice the HFR. Sure panning was a bit smoother, but it made little difference to me. The detail was great, and the animation and effects amazing. Some dude from Mirimar put this together!

Overall the movie's really quite boring, but technically excellent. I give it 3/10 for story, 9/10 for production.

Standard 2D
HFR 3D
Digital 3D

Is there a 48fps in 2D or is HFR a 3D option only?

Does the cinema have to have a HFR capable projector to show in 48FPS?

I saw it on the release day in Digital 3D, however my friends we in the 2D cinema next door. They said the HFR was just OK. However now I wonder whether they saw it in HFR at all? Empire Cinema Island Bay which is not on the list.

Great movie either way, I was thoroughly entertained

There is no 2D HFR option anywhere in the world. See my earlier post for details. The film has not been released in 2D HFR anywhere. Your friends saw it in 2D in standard frame rate.

I'd like to know about Imax. Last time I looked Imax 3D for the hobbit did not have the HFR tag, so it does not look good.

It's the little things that impressed me the most about this implementation of 3D along with HFR: In the scene with Galadriel and Gandalf alone, there was a solitary hair on Gandalf's head that just sprung out to the side away from everything else.

It blew my mind that I could see that single hair, in such high definition and clarify, and in 3D it felt like I could reach out and pluck it.

It's those tiny little details that impress me way more than the CGI or story.

I know that Event and the other chain made sure each major city has at least one screen with HFR. The query was, did they bother to upgrade all the screens at the Embassy to HFR or only the main auditorium? Given that they have 2D sessions also, I suspect not.

Well as the OP I finally got around to seeing the movie myself and relating all the reviews and opinions I had read to my own experiences. I saw it at the Embassy in 3D HFR with Dolby Atmos.

The first thing I noticed was, after the Star Trek trailer (which looks by the way), the movie started with the Warner Bros logo. It was very apparent then that the image quality was already heightened and as the movie progressed I found the enhanced picture quality and smoothness of the video to be a major improvement over what I had ever seen in the cinema before. I at no time felt any nausea during the movie, felt I was watching a HD TV or any of the other negative comments that have been made. The increased picture clarity and smoothness of motion are in my view are a major enhancement to motion picture technology and PJ is to be congratulated in making that leap. Though I was not around at the time ( :-) ) I can imagine nay sayers at that time making similar comments about the first talkie and how sound was not supposed to be part of the movie experience. How wrong they were!

On the subject of sound, the audio was tremendous. Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to the audio experience with sounds originating not only from the front, sides and rear of the cinema but above you and spatially located across the entire auditorium. There were many sequences where these additional audio souces enhanced the overall cinematic experience by immersing you into the total story without being gimmickry.

[As an aside I note in the DomPost The Embassy is advertising the movie as being the only venue in Australasia showing it in Dolby Atmos so they certainly doing their best to differentiate their cinematic capabilities.]

If I had one complaint, it would be I had difficulty getting the 3D glasses to sit properly over my own glasses. Next time I am going to take in a bit of blutack(!) or sticky tape so that I can properly position them.

As for the story itself, well it does start off slower but not in a bad way since there does need to be some scene setting. Once the journey begins the action really doesn't let up and it's quite a ride. I never looked at my watch during the movie, something I found I was doing during the LOTR series.

As a matter of discussion (and not to spoil the story) I am amazed how much food Bilbo Baggins had in his larder and was able to feed so many dwarves! A lot of food for one Hobbit to stock pile and not worry about going to waste :-)

Well to be fair he does have to cater for 1st breakfast, 2nd breakfast, elevensies, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper every day :)
