kiwitrc: Dont confuse the slang.
Example Tinnie can be an aluminium boat, can of beer, or dope wrapped in mums cooking foil.
So can you tell which Tinnie is what in this short test?
We took the tinnie out into the Fiords looking for oysters and had a couple of cold tinnies on board.
Edit: This came from the NZ residency test.

sittingduckz: One thing that grinds my gears is hearing how much better something was done in your/their country... over and over and over.
And then you feel like saying 'If everything is that much better, then go back!!'
Not that you would do this :-)

DravidDavid: I can't think of anything you need to know...But please contribute to the flow of society's shopping and transport facilities by walking up and down escalators. If you have a bad knee or similar, stand to the far left for the convenience of everyone else.
EDIT: If you are in a split house, secure more smoke alarms than usual. Your neighbor more than likely has a cheap oil heater from The Warehouse running 24/7. It is a good idea to have them anyway.

Love the escalator etiquette of London UK, and hate the lack of it here in Norway. How is Kiwis with this? Have not had much escalator experience in NZ.

Now you're getting to the heart of the matter.
Napier is a little different - the climate is wonderful for grapes and wine but tends to add a california feel to life. 'Relaxed'.
Wellington climate is about 5C colder than the rest of the country, because it's situated in a location where warm Northern air continuously collides with cold Southern air....
Etiquette is much the same as the rest of the anglo-saxon world; we drive and walk on the right
Parking is on the left, and you can't cross lanes to park on the other side of the street facing the wrong way (ala UK).
You need to be a very active driver because the roads here are still mostly single lane and full of bends
Wellington has the best coffee culture in the country but is also a public sector city. It's great for IT/Proj Mgmt opportunity but not for private sector activity (most of that is in Auckland).
As quinny said in another post the biggest issue you will find with housing is insulation; many homes older than 40 years tend not to have any. Windows are 3/4mm pane glass, double-glazing is very rare.
Many imported goods are priced similar to European levels; a VW Golf that is €26k is about $45k NZD. We have had more Ford, Holden (GM) and Toyota penetration here than BMW, Peugeot or Merc. Euro marques are pricey to purchase and service.
Regarding tech, I use the Cable network is Welly and would never change to DSL. Vodafone owns it now, and it's pretty stable and just goes.
For mobile I personally use 2degrees because their prepaid billing is real-time and has granular call controls from the website; it's been built for the consumer market using online as the prime interface.

1. Always remove shoes before stepping inside someone's house. If they don't mind you keeping shoes on they will say so.

jarledb:joker97: when people say 'hi how's it going' don't tell them
I thought the only proper answer to that is "Sweet as" ;)

SaltyNZ: Horses are pets, please don't eat your friend's horse. It is ok to suggest they get a donkey go with it as they make the sausages taste better, as long you are good at acting surprised when they tell you the horse is a pet.
If you go to your friends place and they say 'bring a plate,' they mean for you to bring it with food on it. Try not to put horse on it though.
