In discount economy this is around 4 return trips between NZ and the UK, so quite a lot of miles...

Actually the letter had an offer to convert to a BNZ Visa Platinum card - the offer may have been tailored to each individual but mine included 3 years of fee waiver so i had nothing to lose by converting and it meant I keep earning status points and the $1 spend to earn Airpoints was a better ratio.

Pretty sure it was tailored - I don't think my letter mentioned that offer (sniff). It just said that status credits were "changing", which at the time I thought was pretty bad marketing spin giving that the body of the letter said that they were getting rid of them, as their research showed that no-one really used them (or some equally weak excuse).

Was the fee waiver just the difference, or was it the entire fee?

dude ... can you copy that letter? i'm on BNZ platinum visa and i'm not getting nowhere near the stuff you're getting!!! (I think)

What is different is that you have several credit cards that seem to be able to add to the 900 points you need to get to gold (given that you can actually use the points, I have seen several places that bonus miles/points can't be used for the Gold card status).

wow you know after watching Up in the air i have a plan to launch an attack on the gold card in the next five years. a bit like preparing for tour de france ... watch this space ...

It's faaaaaar from being the easiest, this thread already discusses far easier ways.

I'll get Gold this year based on 2 US flights, around 5 or 6 Aussie flights and then domestic probably once a month (with some credit card status points to top it up).

Got gold quickly by doing a return trip internationally (with a Star Alliance hop) and a couple of Tauranga>Auckland return flights.

Every time I've flown internationally the Koru lounges have been very full which is why I made the comment earlier in the thread that implied the threshold for Gold should be raised a bit.

hmm ... so there is a way to get star alliance gold with other airlines, but I cannot use that gold card to enter koru lounge if I am claiming airnz airpoints? what would be the point to get the gold card of the other airline?

If you are a Asiana Gold member, you can earn Asiana points and that card allows you into the Koru Lounge when there is no Star Gold lounge.

There are people who hold multiple Gold cards but they do a lot of travelling and split their points out .....

If you like the AirNZ perks you need to stick with the AirNZ programme ..... The Asiana programme or any other programme have their own perks.
