Me: Not illegal, no. But it is against the NetFlix Terms of Service. Somehow I don't think they mind that much though, as we are paying customers.

ACK about the region stuff. However if it does ever get to NZ, I seriously doubt it will be as awesome as the US or UK variants. The NZ iTunes store is living proof of that. We still can't hire/purchase TV shows. Hopefully any eventual Netflix AU will be better for you.

Don't count on it. iTunes AU TV section is pretty limited to what has been shown there no modern US stuff so I suspect Netflix AU would be like Quickflix where NZ is restricted to what Sky and all will allow..

Movie studios (and game publishers, etc) have proven over and over that they are extremely foolish when it comes to fighting piracy though. Look at the continued silly release schedules for plenty of movies, TV shows, crazy regional pricing and so on.

Went to see a film last week (Wolf of Wall Street - which was excellent by the way). Before the movie they showed a promo for Blacklist which is "coming soon on TV3". It looked kind of interesting, so I looked it up. It started its US run in early-September and has already finished over there, and is doubtless readily available on all the pirate sites.

So they are spending up large to entice people with content, and then having a ludicrous 5+ month delay from when it was out elsewhere, and not following up their advertising by actually screening the content soon afterwards. A good fraction of the people who may have been interested by their campaign will likely have downloaded and watched the whole series in higher quality than they will show it (ie uncut and commercial free), by the time TV3 have got of their fat backsides and shown the first episode.

They are idiots. If it's really a good show then it should have run within no more than a week (preferably within hours) of the US release. And why bother heavily promoting it so far before it has started?

Totally good points re iTunes. Google play is the same. Hopefully it wont come here then!

From an "insiders perspective", we are fighting the studios all the time to get faster release of all product, especially TV series, we get the same response "it's beyond the local company's control as it's dictated by the TV companies" I.e sky mostly. There has been some change with the movie release timeframe reducing by 30-60 days after theatrical release (now about 90 days after theatres).

Flicking through Netflix's new release schedule, there is quite a mix there, with some DTV type product that has just been / or about to be released product on there, otherwise it's quite a mix. TV shows really seems to be their streaming draw card with some great series (orange is the new black, house of cards etc).

Disappointingly, the studios don't seem to give a rats rectum about piracy. In a recent meeting between NZFACT, the studios and the rental heads, it was advised that not 1 notice has or will be issued as the studios simply don't want to stump up the $25 fee (political reasons).

Own a DVD rental store, have Netflix, that seems so sad........

DVD rentals does not seem like a future proof business. In Norway they have all but been made extinct. The same thing has happened to record stores and more and more stores that sell DVDs/Bluerays. All because of online streaming and it happened lightening fast.

I am going to make my contribution towards that when my subscription lapses in about 6 months. How about you?

For me its going to be Freeview (I think), and otherwise I am pretty well covered with Netflix US, iTunes US and other streaming services.

Made my contribution about a year ago. Looking back I can't believe how much money I threw away at Sky.

We have a Tivo for freeview, a Roku and PS3 for Hulu/Netflix...

Its not about what Sky will allow. Sky buys and licenses the rights for NZ region from the content creators/owners. That license includes exclusive terms that they own the rights for this geography and no one else is allowed to have them. Remember back to when parallel importing was 'banned"?

That would be nice, but unfortunately the opposite is true. The licensing specifically states what platforms sky may show the program on. If sky want to show it online, or on catch up, or subscription, or pay per view, those are all different contracts with new charges.
