I would really like a NAS in order to store all of my media and files centrally, and as a better storage solution for my girlfriend's work files as she works from home.

Here is my backup solution, a bunch of Titans 12.7mm sata trays as my hot swap 'backup' for my laptop, with themselves being backed up to 1TB USB HDDs.

I really need a NAS! :)

I've been looking into putting a NAS on my home network. Currently I just use my desktop turned on all the time. With the arrival of my first child a few months ago the camera is getting a good workout and subsequently have had to think a bit more about storage of photos and other important data. Having a NAS to plug into my LAN would be a great start!

I have a WD 1tb 3.5 external drive, and a 750gb Samsung 2.5 in a $7 DealExtreme enclousure, Would be nice if It could be all networked to store movies on etc

My current solution is a D-Link DNS 320 with 2 x 1TB drives with rsync backup between the two with a 3rd 1TB drive stored off-site and rotated regularly. That's the theory at least. Maybe this NAS will help me achieve my dreams.

(hat tip to @rossmnz for the original image, I have the same NAS and similar tiles so why not? Thought I'd change it up a bit though!)

In all honesty I use a WDTV Live hub as both a NAS and a media player.
The setup works quite well, when the Hub is in standby it serves as a NAS box for regular file shares.
One its a pretty decent media player that will play anything!

The issue is the 1Tb of storage which can fill up, so I spend time having to remove stuff. A NAS has been on my mind for a while, but they are pricey bits of kit IMO.

Yes that is string, because someone accidentally wrenched the USB socket off the pcb and this VVV needed a rehoming:

<- don't ask me where I am - I haven't a clue: its a tech thing ;)
Housewife computerer: not particularly great at either.
And don't take me too seriously.

Like any proper storage it is usb attached to the main media computer and shoved to the back of the cabinet.

A NAS is next on the infrastructure upgrade list, so winning this would be awesome!

This is Harpie. Harpie is an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive Cloud Edition. The basic principles behind the design and the custom debian OS are nice, but Iomega does not love the HMNHDCE and has never produced any updates that would use the hardware and OS to it's full capability. Harpie's samba shares are very slow and it's twonky media server has become flakey. No one really loves Harpie any more and she is forced to live on the hearth in front of the old fire place where it is dark and dusty.

The people in the house wish they had a Plex server and Harpie wishes that someone would upgrade her to a newer version of Debian, maybe even Openmediavault. But no one has a place big enough to move all the stuff on Harpie to, so Harpie is stuck on Debian Lenny and the people ignore her.

What Harpie really needs is a new friend. Maybe a Thecus N2130 to help the people of the house with their music and videos. Maybe if Harpie's new friend looked after all her stuff she could finally know what Debian wheezy feels like. Maybe then she could have an important job like backing up photos from all of the camera containing devices that also live in the house.
