For the amount of travel and it looks like spending you do ... the Kiwibank Plat is the best for AirNZ points. The BNZ GlobalPlus Gold Amex is higher per $66 spent and a lower annual fee but they do not earn status points and doesn't bother me for the places and the minimal spending I do but if you spend more ... more places that do not accept Amex can add up.

There is a Plat "charge card" which earns Amex Rewards Points only not AirNZ ...

The AirNZ card. Re: the real Amex cards. There is a Plat card around a $399 annual fee (first year $199 discounted) I think but they don't earn as quick as the Kiwibank. Each $75 per 1APD earnt. You do get one return domestic ticket though for free.

The only thing I have yet to try out is that with a real Amex card they might provide a higher foreign exchange rate. I've only rang them up and compared to what I get via a NZ Bank (but still an Amex card). They seem to be 2-4% higher. In time I will for my own interest pay with a real Amex (mine is a 1% earning free Amex card, prior just to get the $50 promotion), $0 annual fee. What I plan to do is pay one amount with the real Amex and for the 2nd same item same cost put it via my BNZ Amex and compare ...

joker97: no loyalty involved. just ... cumbersome - i like simplicity. eg one card for eftpos. one banking app, one password to remember. i trust the BNZ CC customer service dept. walk into a branch to sort complex stuff ... i guess a kiwibank CC could be worth the trouble .. *sigh !

I have kiwibank mastercard and asb for main banking chq/sav/mortgage. previously I had bnz visa + asb. There is no cumbersomeness, really, with that combo. the kiwibank credit card application was able to be done online too - only had to drop into a post shop to set initial pin on card

I find visa/mc the same. Its Amex that no one wants to take because of the fees

Is it out of the question to have airpoints added to a corporate AMEX? All I know about my card apart from using it is the pin and having my name on it. Someone else does the rest.

Not all cards are airline cards. You need swap cards Even within same bank. E.g. bnz does vanilla cards, flying cards and Airnz cards. Anz does Qantas, Airnz, vanlilla and cash back cards.

If the amex does not have the Airnz logo on the card then no ... Amex might have their own rewards programme though you could swap bundle of amex reward points I.to various airlines cards or hotels for that matter. The rates is lower though. Check with work though could be breaking rules.

Sorry if you have already answered this elsewhere in the thread but I'd love to know why they are useless to you. I'd love to even more give you my Airpoints number so you can transfer your "useless" Airpoints to me! ;-)

I think useless for those who have points might be referring to the burn ratio as being not worth it. The opportunity cost.

For myself who doesn't do work travel or upper class travel to treat myself it's better to use AirNZ for a few crumbs with my credit card after deducting the annual fee, I do like the free travel insurance off a gold card and then I use an overseas airline card for mileage accrual as it is easier althou there isn't the certainty that you get with the Airpoints system dollar matched value.

if i were you firstly i'd look for a card with
1) lowest fee
2) lowest rate (if you are the type that don't pay on time - otherwise it makes no difference what the interest rate is)
3) rewards

this is how i see rewards
- flybuys. $50 for 1 flybuy point. 600 points = $100 worth on the flybuys so $30000 spending gives $100 reward
- airpoints $75 for $1. $7500 spentding to get $100. so you need to pay $50 pa. so actually $12000 spending for $100.

but yes, rewards is no 3 (or 2) on the priority list. but 1 ties in with 3 you see ... so it's a bit complex ...

Think 900 is total required to gold 450 is total for silver.

As per original topic of retaining status points, booking any travel (or travel upgrade) with Airpoints does not return any status points, for obvious reasons discussed - double accounting.

For people who fly every other week, booking even 'more flights' to use up air points may be challenging for some. The Airpoints store range miserable at best (who needs a coffee machine for 800 airpoints)?

I end up using the points to immediate family members for travel which they would not normally do.

'Just book the more expensive flight' does not always translate to more points. It only makes sense on certain routes and/or booking class (it is possible to earn more status points on a seat-only+cheaper booking over a more expensive seat + bag)

Can anyone work out for me why 2 flights same seat + bag and same seats

One would be 17 SP and the return is 15
