DarthKermit: I can't see it ever being voluntarily introduced. China I think is the only country with a one child policy.

Perhaps in my life time (I'm nearly 45) I'll live to see natural population control because of collapses in the food chain we rely on, plus more and more wars and other conflicts over increasingly scarce resources that will also reduce population.

I have no children and have never wanted any. My only sister is 43 and has none either.

No it won't be voluntarily introduced - it will be imposed. No one volunteered to pay income tax (it was originally a temporary measure in the UK at least, introduced to fund wars) but we are all grudgingly accepting of that now.

First step will be a reversal of the present tax treatment.

One child - benefit paid
Second child - no benefit paid
Third child - 5% income tax penalty applied
Fourth child - 10% additional income tax penalty

or some such. Dressed up as a way of reducing government expenditure etc.

Ok then, imposed. I still can't see that happening without a huge stink being kicked up (whether or not it's deemed to be for the collective good of the human race). Look at how the 1.3 billion Catholics feel about contraception for example.

Just look at how much we as a species tend to drag our heels and bury our heads in the sand over climate change, and whether or not we are contributing to that climate change.

I'm of the opinion that we should put that climate change debate aside and focus more on reducing all the pollution and environmental destruction that we cause. THAT can't be denied.

I agree. I also think that reducing the human population is a key necessity in achieving that.

I totally agree that population growth is an issue that very seriously needs to be addressed, if we haven't gone too far already.  Unfortunately I'm pessimistic that it will happen before there is a totally compelling event to cause it.

The key issue (as I see it) is that economies are built like a pyramid scheme.  They are built on the need for expansion and growth (fuelled by greed), and the easiest way to achieve this is by adding consumers to the bottom tier.  Until everyone (bottom tier included) stops aspiring to be higher up the pyramid, the pyramid will continue to grow as those elected (or self-elected) to power take the easy option of simply encouraging the addition of consumers at the lower levels.
