You're lucky--- Since 2003, I have probably had a little over 10 HDD failures , and a couple of SSDs.

I've tried putting harddrives in the freezer (didn't work), replaced logic boards (that worked!!), and used all sorts of data recovery software (varying success) to eek out fragments of files on failing harddrives. The click of death is absolutely the end of life for a dirve.

So I've lost a bit of data, not the absolutely crucial stuff (like photos, personal docs/tax & business docs etc) as I usually had multiple backups of that -- friends/relatives have also lost data. In my anecdotal experience data loss is really common . But as commonly stated the plural of anecdote is not data but that's all I have to go on :)

use a nas drive that allows itself to be backed up to a remote nas drive such as readynas. Buy one for yourself and one for a friend.

One point that needs to be made that's only been touched on in this thread: Think about your backups and out of of those thousands of images for example how many have become corrupted on your PC and your backups are only copies of the corrupted files. (Readynas covers this :))

Worth mentioning IoSafe drives.

Either standalone or now in NAS form, these things are built like tanks, designed to withstand fire, flood and crushing (e.g. in house collapse). I have a 1.5Tb one on my desk which I used to use for my images - sadly too small now and I have yet to think of a good new purpose for it really.

However if you cannot get your data off site for some reason, they are a way of adding additional defences against physical factors.

Well his Dad works in IT, and is super focused on backups! He is happy, innocent and doing well at school. He will be ok :)

Well his Dad works in IT, and is super focused on backups! He is happy, innocent and doing well at school. He will be ok :)

Phew. My father was an investment surveyor but I certainly knew nothing about building or valuing commercial buildings and finding tenants and finance when I was six. I think my major interest then was Lego.

I do find it sad how quickly children have to grow up these days. Childhood has contracted from about 14 years to about 5! No one spends summer afternoons catching tadpoles and sticklebacks in stolen jam jars mother was saving - they just blow sht up on X Station and Play Box and gawp at phones....

Very true.

What is the reason why upload is so slow? It seems so essential yet is hamstrung by the system deliberately, it seems.

Times change and children are not immune. It was not that long before your tadpole catching times that children had very little play time, they were working in factories, mines and Mills etc, especially in the UK and most of Europe.

Children in NZ, except those affected by poverty have a good life and not just in front of PS or Xbox screens. Just travel around the many sports fields in say Lower and Upper Hutt and see the hundreds of children playing sports for example.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

No. There isn't

Source, live in Christchurch got contents insurance easy as getting it in Wellington and at a similar price. If not cheaper.

It took me months, but I had about 300gb backed up to crashplan while I was on ADSL....it's not really an excuse.

Of course it was also backed up a couple of local places first - but that wouldn't have helped inteh event of fire/theft. But I started with pictures, then added more and more as they caught up. The mistakes are, not doing anything as it's too big, will be slow, and giving your backup the firehose.

+1 for an IOSafe, not cheap though... I would hope that the Uni's would get some kind of backup service to offer students. Filecloud for example.
