Having said that I'm not sure I agree that data loss is a high probability.
WyleECoyoteNZ: So, In light of this story, what is the best way to backup files?use a nas drive that allows itself to be backed up to a remote nas drive such as readynas. Buy one for yourself and one for a friend.
Let's say I want to have another backup of my personal digital photos, dating back to 2004. Currently, the size on disk is circa 90Gb. Aside from external HDD, what other alternatives are there?

Well his Dad works in IT, and is super focused on backups! He is happy, innocent and doing well at school. He will be ok :)

Well his Dad works in IT, and is super focused on backups! He is happy, innocent and doing well at school. He will be ok :)
Phew. My father was an investment surveyor but I certainly knew nothing about building or valuing commercial buildings and finding tenants and finance when I was six. I think my major interest then was Lego.
I do find it sad how quickly children have to grow up these days. Childhood has contracted from about 14 years to about 5! No one spends summer afternoons catching tadpoles and sticklebacks in stolen jam jars mother was saving - they just blow sht up on X Station and Play Box and gawp at phones....
