This one is not a maths question and seems particularly vague.

Any ideas as to why 4 September is the answer?
I chose 3 June as it was the only date that was an odd number. It seemed as good a reason as any.

It's the only one that ends in "ber"?
It's the only odd month?
Because they felt like it?
The answers actually are "correct" at random so it's lucky dip?

That's the rub. Your answer is correct, or just as correct as any other answer with an equally justifiable answer.
The problem is you've been marked as wrong, and you've clearly outlined why it's right.
I chose 4 September in that one as it was the only one that wasn't a 'tidy' fraction. 4/9 vs 2/6, 4/8. 3/6, 2/4 or 6/8. Crappy reason I know.
New police cars introduced every Sept so revenue is very low that day? [need to go thru compliance testing and speed radar calibration etc ...]
PS I am just making it up ...

It doesn't start with J or A
The others aren't anniversaries of these events.
It's a Virgo, and you just can't trust those hippy caring mofos.
It appears to be the only odd month, the rest are even.
Very cryptic

Yep, mentioned that one already.
It's also the only one of those listed with three syllables.
4 September - 4/9
2 June - 2/6 - 1/3
4 August - 4/8 - 1/2
3 June - 3/6 - 1/2
2 April - 2/4 - 1/2
6 August - 6/8 - 3/4
If you treat them as fractions, then 4/9 is the only that can't be simplified ?
Ok, I'm stretching a bit here...
Edit - And yes I'm slow - I got interrupted in writing this message
June has 4 letters
April has 5 letters
August has 6 letters
September has 9 letters - breaks the sequence

Yup. It's actually a psych test. No matter what you answer, you will be marked wrong.
Can you cope with the occasional mistake? Can you cope with having your judgement questioned? Can you cope with having some arbitrary rule enforced against you? Will you complain? Will you accept the authority of the anonymous exam setter?

4 September is the odd one out because it has a tick in the Correct answer column. All the others have crosses.
...
Well, it makes as much sense as anything else!
Was thinking about starting a new thread but how about this maths puzzle:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11633856
The story says an IQ of 150 is required to solve it. Don't want to appear to be a Smart Donkey but I saw the solution in about one minute - and I don't quite have an IQ of 150. I bet a lot of people on this site would see it equally as quickly - so calling BS on the story.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
