I can't see how a petition can have any great effect on Hosking's employment. The only numbers that matter are the viewing ratings for his show. There will be considerably more people watching on any given night than will sign the petition. As long as enough Neilsen Families are watching him, the ad money will flow, and he will have a job.

Personally, I've seen approximately 3 minutes of his show ever (a segment that mentioned my place of work), and I have no intention of deliberately watching him ever again. But then, there's many, many TV shows I can't stand, I don't watch them either, and I don't see any petitions to prevent The Real Housewives of Auckland being strangled at birth (the show, not the wives, I'm not advocating violence to wives, women, or Aucklanders)...

If anyone knows anyone with a peoplemeter, present the petition to them. Otherwise, what's the point? If public interest broadcasting was a thing in NZ, then a petition might make a ripple somewhere, but, especially under the present regime, cash is king. While Hosking brings in eyeballs, and ad money, he'll be there every night smugging it up for the punters.

Not a fan of Mike Hosking, or of Seven Sharp generally. But if everybody who I thought was bad at their job got sacked there would be no breakfast radio, there wouldn't be a single person in the kitchen or behind the counter at any KFC store I've ever been in, the boys from One Direction would be flipping burgers (and if they were at KFC they'd be sacked from that), Shortland Street would be 30 minutes of dead airtime... I could go on.

I solve these problems without calling for our dole queues to be lengthened by terminating the employment of everybody with (to me) questionable competence in their chosen field. I simply opt out. I don't watch Shortland Street. I don't buy food from KFC. I don't listen to One Direction CDs. I don't turn on the radio in the mornings. And I don't watch Seven Sharp.

Anyway, the petition text is badly written and includes the incorrect use of an apostrophe. I'd never vote for that.

I am utterly, absolutely, completely fed up and sick and tired of being treated as moronic advertising fodder by the blood-sucking parasites who have undermined broadcasting in this country. I want better. We deserve better. This is like living on a constant diet of burger king for the soul. It kills the minds of our young people and makes them spiritually flabby and lethargic. It causes us to accept without question the pointless meanderings of mediocre politicians. It poisons the well of our creativity and common sense. It pollutes our values and expels creative imagination in one big flatulent excretion. Crap in, crap out, and we are all being buried in it.

Why is it that the left like to shutdown free speech. Who cares what a non-practicing barrister who divides his time between China & Wellington thinks.

How come there were no petitions for John Campbell to be taken off air?

Why should the Govt decide who is on air or not? The sooner the long suffering taxpayer sells TVNZ & RadioNZ the sooner they'll still be worth something.

I think Hosking is a smarmy prick. But he does ask hard questions and you just gave him a heap of free publicity.

No viewers = no ad revenue = no Hosking

The problem with that idea is that as soon as the government starts meddling with the news and current affairs of a broadcaster, they get accused of political interference. Helen Clark faced the same accusations from Ian Fraser when he was in charge of TVNZ. It's best if the government keeps its nose out of TVNZ's news decisions and let them go about their business.

I think you're right but there are more 'intellectual' alternatives available e.g. The National Programme - which has the advantage of being ad-free - but few people want to listen to it. Not the huddled masses anyway.

I hardly listen to NP and when I do, I think 'this is interesting/different and quite good' - but eventually miss the razzle and end up back with commercial radio. Maybe people crave crap - tv, radio, food, other news, magazines....?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

In NZ we are very badly let down by news organisations, to the point where I think it is verging on affecting democracy, simply due to the lack of indepth journalism. The good programs have all but disappeared. One of these programs had a big part of getting an innocent man out of jail in NZ. Politicians these days don't have to answer serious indepth questioning by the media, they are cut down to small sound bites in the new program. It is only going to get worse when these news organizations merge. Radio NZ is really the last man standing, and their funding by the government isn't exacly great.

We do pay a lot in taxes, for Radio NZ, and other taxpayer funded programs via the platinum fund and NZ on air. Newspapers have largely always been funded by advertising, so only a proportion of their revenue was actually selling papers. Many magazine companies actually give away industry mags, to get their circulation numbers up and they are mainly paid for by ads. The internet though has diluted this. In some ways NZ is worse off or news with the internet.

In terms of Shock Jocks on TV and radio, if they were posting the same rants in this forum, they would likely be accused of trolling and be banned for some of the things they say. This partition is really just feeding on that. Ignoring is the best way to beat trolling.

What I think this topic has highlighted, is how people are getting fed up with the way TVNZ is heading. I think they should remove NZ from the name, and they should sell it off. But the gov are getting pretty good money from it, and I don't think they have a mandate to sell any assets like this.

I'll point out also from the Broadcasting Act 1989 section 44:

No responsible Minister or any other Minister, and no person acting by or on behalf of or at the direction of a responsible Minister or any other Minister, may give a direction in respect of—

(a) any programme or content; or

(b) the gathering or presentation of news or the preparation or presentation of any current affairs programme or content.

So the government simply can't say to TVNZ "I don't like this guy, get rid of him" or "this guy is my puppet, give him his own show" or "your current affairs show is mean to me, cut it out"

This to a point. But people do need to get information about what is happening in NZ from somewhere. Otherwise you end up with a break down in information and democracy. Even now, it is very difficult to find out what is happening locally in my area, as papers have cut back a lot on local news. The problem in NZ, due to the lack of competition, all forms of non state funded media are heading in this direction.
