I shall cite as examples the significant objections to the Wellington runway extension, the latest attempt by Forest & Bird to kill off the Ruataniwha Dam and the endless navel gazing on whether the three parochial local bodies in the Wairarapa should become one.

That is pretty much a clear indication that there is a housing crisis. Not only that, but that looks like it averages the price across the entire country, so if they were just looking at Aucklands, it would be far worse.

I don't think it has anything to do with wages not rising enough. Inflation at the moment is supposedly almost stagnant, so wages don't need to rise by that much. In many countries there is little inflation and wage growth at the moment because the economic situation in the world is so bad. That is why the Reserve bank is dropping interest rates, because they want to increase inflation. But all it is doing is pushing up house prices, as people can then afford to borrow more,

Get the companies to move from Auckland, the people (might) follow (if they want to work). At the moment with everything being in Auckland or moving to Auckland, the problem is only going to get worse.

There are other parts of the country to locate things in ... though Dunedin seems to be self-sabotaging in this regard so as a result, I won't suggest Dunedin (where I live)

However, from a businesses point of view, if you have the need to travel internationally, and further afield than just Australia, your better off being based in Auckland and not have the added expense of internal domestic flights

It's a chicken and egg scenario, what to do first? move folks where there is no work in the hope that companies will relocate, or do we relocate companies in the hope that folks will relocate.

Yes, move the people where there is no work, the ones who are not currently working anyway.

Break some eggs or do nothing, you want the government to do something but what?

You have told me why my ideas wont work but not an idea that will.

It's not really that hard to sort out. 1 move things out of Auckland, i.e. give tax breaks or a different tax rate to companies that have their main work force outside of the main centers (Auckland/Wellington/chch) etc for a set number of years. Also help the people in the those companies to move with the company to a new regional town (Napier, Whanganui, Whangarei, Nelson) with a "moving fund" or tax break.

This in turn should bring housing cost down in Auckland (demand lowers) and slowly increase them in regional towns and building of housing in those areas, it will also bring new business to the regions and new business opportunities.

It would also fix the motorway issues in auckland as less people = less traffic and not so many trucks supplying business with goods. Might also be a good case for rail for stock/good movement from the ports etc.

I for one would be happy to move from Auckland to a region if I could get a job that is in my line of work with a nice income, at the moment however everything is either Auckland or Wellington (where we have housing problems etc).

Given the rate of inflation current wages levels would seem OK. We certainly do not want a return to high inflation that will only add to the problem.

You have told me why my ideas wont work but not an idea that will.

1. Scaling Tax incentives for businesses in regions other than Auckland.

2. Create and enhance ways for people to invest money in something other than housing and land.

3. Remove all incentives for investing in housing/land banking. Negative gearing gone. Land taxes cunningly applied.

Sounds doable.

The 'move unemployed people into dead and dying towns' plan sounds moronic.

Sounds like the UK - Heathrow runaway, Hinkley Point, HS2...

At the present minute, I'd agree. It's true to say that all those things have far higher financial and social implications (who ever wanted to get to Birmingham faster?!) And the Heathrow thing will impact a good deal more people more significantly than the Wellington proposal.

It really does seem that we in NZ want to make our economy bigger and more effective but whenever someone suggests something that may actually help with that, we consult for 50 years and do nothing.

I've been asked to apply for positions in Auckland. Each time I've told the recruiter (politely) I won't contemplate any role located in Auckland.

They get quite grumpy when you tell them that. Must be frustrating, but it's a market reality - I'm responding to a market signal that says "Full. Do not move here. You can't afford to live here".

The signal should also be interpreted as "Full. Move away". But people on lower incomes tend to rely heavily on friends and family for (free) support and would be reluctant to move to a smaller town. Catch 22.

Agreed. I note this opinion piece from Air NZ's GM of Networks in relation to the proposed Wellington Runway extension.

One of the reasons given for the northern drift and why Corporate head offices are in Auckland is the lack of a true international airport in Wellington.
