Lizard1977:

... Jodie Whittaker cast in the role.  Other than Attack the Block and an episode of Black Mirror, I haven't seen her in anything,

Venus 2006 was her big-screen debut.  Good film.

She's most famous for being one of the lead characters in all the episodes of Broadchurch. She was very good too.

Geektastic:I saw an interesting comment on a UK site re this particular casting where someone wondered how a female doctor would get on if the story was set in a time when a woman's opinion was about equal to that of a horse and whether the BBC would completely re-write medieval history to accommodate their casting choice!

I made a similar comment earlier in this thread, but stating I believe this can open up new story opportunities and challenges the character has never faced before - and so if done right is a very good thing. But also that the writers will have to strike a careful balance between overdoing it and ignoring it completely.

Paul1977:

I'd rate David Tennant as the best, followed by Tom Baker.

John Pertwee.

I met him once. Very nice guy who took the time to talk to me and a mate while he was on holiday in NZ.  We were about 12 and our families were out together.  He noticed we had recognised him and took some time to come over and talk to us.

I don't see how that's all that much different from other Doctors.

'Doctor, he's the King of France!'

'Oh yeah? Well I'm a Lord of Time.'

Lady Doctor: We need to get over to the tower so that we can turn off the bomb!

Medieval King: Who gave you permission to speak? Go and do needlepoint, the men are talking.

Lady Doctor [Doesn't care in the slightest about Medieval King's sensibilities]: I have travelled time and space for 3000 years. You're in charge of a small pile of stones. You can either help me turn off the bomb, or die. Your move.

I think that's exactly what makes this casting so interesting, as it's an opportunity to present different types of conflict.  Also, it's a sci-fi show, not a documentary.  There have been plenty of instances of the Doctor challenging authority where any other ordinary person would be summarily executed for such insolence, but we suspend disbelief because it's meant to be fun and entertaining.

But at the same time the quality of the writing under Steven Moffat's tenure has been getting consistently lazier and sloppier, with a lot of it being pretty much completely nonsensical (even within the fictional Doctor Who universe). You can only suspend your disbelief so much. There has been far too much "I'm the Doctor, I'm amazing, I can solve any problem, everyone should tremble at my greatness", and everyone falls in line 'just because'.

I'm hoping under the reins of Chris Chibnall we might get a more grounded (and less arrogant) Doctor and more believable stories (as believable as you can get in Doctor Who anyway). But what I really want are just well written stories that make sense and are internally consistent within that universe.

EDIT: for clarity.

Even then women held positions of authority and were respected for it. The commenter had not bothered to read much medieval history.

Tom Baker then John Pertwee. They are really my only Doctors. I also preferred it when it was a series of 12 (I think) 30 minute episodes telling one story over all 12.

I'd agree with most of that.  I seem to recall a quote from the early years of the "modern era" of Dr Who, possibly from Russell T Davies, about how the plots of stories should not be resolved by a macguffin like the Sonic Screwdriver.  The "magic wand" could do almost anything, even unbelievable things, but it should never be the thing which "solved" the central problem in the story.  Recent seasons seem to me to have broken this "rule" quite a lot, and for comparison I went back to the Eccleston/Tennant seasons and rewatched them.  Sure enough, it was very rare that things got wrapped up by some "magic wand."  I think this will be the key challenge for Chris Chibnall, to bring the story writing back to a place where stories are resolved because of the characters, not their gadgets.  But it shouldn't matter whether the Doctor is male or female.  What matters is the accumulated history of a character that has existed for thousands of years, and I think the force of that experience will overcome any "historical" pushback.

In addition there are a couple of very serious continuity points to cover well in this series. For instance 13th incarnation is the maximum for a timelord. There are established ways out of that, but I'd prefer it's not a trivial point. : ).

I'm pretty sure they covered that in The Time of the Doctor.  The timelords gave him a new set of regenerations.

You can argue whether it's an appropriate way to handle that issue or not, but like it or not they have already moved on from that particular limitation.

I think you may have a very poor view of history if you think women in the middle ages didnt hold power or have any rights

I might suggest you take the time to learn about Eleanor of Aquitane, Empress Matilda, Aud ketilsdatter (one of the founders of iceland).

Apart from being rich enough to buy the province of Aquitane, she was also good at Math and as I understand helped formalise the english language.

In northman life, woman had authority to run the house and farm. In Ireland a lot of society was matriarchal not suprising since the celts prior to that believed in equal rights.

A.I.  (Automation rebranded)
Gender Neutral
(a person who believes in equality and who does not believe in/use stereotypes. Examples such as gender, binary, nonbinary, male/female etc.)

 ...they/their/them...

I'm more amused around the 13 regeneration limit rule bending, than the fact that this incarnation is a female.

Like in Bond, a shake up to a female bond could be amusing too.  Anything to bring some fun back into the franchise, rather than watching Daniel Craig suffer through weak scripts with the same grumpy look on his face throughout.
