... Something that did Fruit Toast well would be good. ...

This almost warrants its own topic

TipTop 'cafe-style' is very sweet, hot-cross bun like, and cooks very quickly.  2 Nanoseconds too long and it's way too dry.

Burgen fruit-loaf, less sweet, appears more whole-grainy/healthy, even though not particularly thick-sliced, takes ages to cook and has quite a high tolerance.

Vogels, thick slices, somewhere in between the two above both sweetness and cooking time.

I love them all. If I had to rank them I'd probably go 1. Burgen, 2. Vogel, 3. TipTop.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I am 3, 1, 2 from that list. There isn't much in it though :)

I make my own. Tends to be more dense that the store bought. And lots of cinnamon. Takes a cycle and a bit in our toaster, probably similar to a Vogels. Also because it’s home made is has no preservatives so we tend to freeze it which adds a complication.

Again the brevile is good for it.

Be very careful with toast. There are guidelines that recommend toasting the minimum you possibly can.

The darker it is, the more harmful it is.

You should remove the crust before eating bread* i guess?

I was just considering if there was a thread like this.

We’ve got a Breville Platnium 4 slot with semi-modern niceties like defrost and pull-up to not singe fingers when taking the toast out.

Main problem with it, and the reason why we swapped back to a 1985 Goldair (Ten out of ten, Mr. Goldair) two slot, the Breville absolutely chars regular toast on the minimum setting. This is regular 1-1.5cm slices getting crispy browned from frozen and black on edges when thawed, thinner slices don’t stand a chance unless you stand watch.

Half considering taking it apart to fix but wouldn’t know where to start.

Weirdly, my experience with toasters is that the newer they are the slower they tend to be. My baseline is the ancient Zip toaster - not the Briscoes branded contemporary model, but the old ones from the ‘70s (and possibly earlier?), and I’m thinking NZ-made. Compared to those, every toaster we’ve had takes forever to toast. Toasting Vogel’s toast slice on our current one (a Breville chrome thing) requires it set to nearly as high as possible. The Zips were of an era where toasters were only ever two slice, but they were also from an era when such products were actually repairable. My aunt still has and uses one, so they can last.

As for what to toast, in our family Vogel’s toast slice is the default; our kids get quite excited the rare occasions we’ll have white bread! My brother’s sourdough makes the best toast, I reckon.

Best raisin toast - I’d vote for Vogel’s raisin bread - big, fat chunks of deliciousness.

Edit: oops, the NZ made Zip toaster was referenced for the same reasons earlier in the thread: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=249330&page_no=2#2231744

The main issue with our Breville, is the inaccuracy of the done meter. It's a slider mechanism and has got less accurate over time. It's annoying.

We have a cheap ZIP toaster. I keep meaning to replace it with a "better" one but every time I go shopping I take a look inside the more expensive models and they all look the same as my cheap ZIP.

My biggest issue with it the first slice/s are very slow to be toasted. But once it's warmed up every slice after that is charcoal no matter how far I move the dial towards the lighter setting.

during level 4 lockdown last year my breville toaster died.  As we couldnt go to local store and buy new one as were closed I purchased a $15 2 slice toaster from countdown.  Not sure if I was just lucky or they all are good. It toasts perfectly every time.  Just hoping it lasts the distance

Definitely 0,0,0,0 in this house! Not a popular option.

At $899 for a Dualit I’d want it to make a cup of tea and give me a foot massage as well.

Our toaster was purchased in 2013. I called Breville as I had been told they had stock issues of the new 4 slice model, to ask if the model I had, was known for it's inaccurate doneness slider. She seemed extremely confident that the newer models would be good, but assured me that they would take it back if we weren't happy with it. Better the devil you know sometimes, we have mostly been pretty happy with our 2 slice, so we got a good deal at Farmers and bought the updated 4 slice version of the one we had. I'll report back in a few weeks with our opinion of it.

This was my takeaway, too. I went in with the idea of selecting a toaster based on how non cheap the slider mechanism felt, but all the ones I wrenched in-store felt very similar. It's not a complicated device, so I don't believe it warrants spending too much money on, so just went with a four-slice Breville (because I liked the styling). It turns bread into toast, so I'm happy enough
