GregV:

We are in Rotorua, and my wife (on 2degrees) just received the 'Auckland' emergency mobile announcement.  I am on Spark, and did not receive the alert (as expected).  Wonder if 2d does something different with the alert?

My elderly mother in Dunedin just got it too - she kindly let me know that Auckland was having a flood.

They set the things off too late here (Chch), mind you I doubt few slept through the quake. There was a stream of traffic leaving the coast (New Brighton etc), I can see the roads from here (on the hills).

It is pleasing seeing many Kiwis heeding the advice of "if it's long and strong get gone" before there is any advisory from CD to do so. If we lived in the risk zone we would have gone to higher ground after last nights shake. It was long and strong here.

Did not notice it at all to be honest. Not until my wife called me about an hour ago did I even know it had happened.

Our house is at least 170m above amsl and about 40km from the sea so if I see water at the door, I guess most people are already swimming...!

@Geektastic you didn't feel last nights 7.1? I admire your sleeping ability. You are far enough up Wairarapa to be OK. I wouldn't feel comfortable in Ngawi.

The instructions are to keep away from the shoreline in all of NZ. Since morning have been watching people walking on the beach in Island Bay, Wellington. You have to wonder at people.

This notice now from NEMA:

https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/

GNS Science has advised that the largest waves have now passed, and therefore the threat level is now downgraded to a Beach and Marine threat for all areas which were previously under Land and Marine threat.

All people who evacuated can now return.

The advice remains, for all areas under Beach and Marine threat, to stay off beach and shore areas.

We live in a Lockwood home, it seems to announce the pending earthquake arrival a few seconds prior with some impressive creaks.

That's not correct. Decent chunks of the coastline are classified as "No threat", including island bay:

I'm back at work now. It would've been nice to have the rest of the day off, but oh well. I might have a cameo on TV1 tonight as there was someone videoing everyone coming down the hill!

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

For those that got the alert for the BOP and East Coast, did your phone display the macron's in the Maori place names? Keen to know if this is a phone issue or an issue with the Emergency Mobile Alert system?

This is a screen grab from my sisters phone who lives down in the Bay of Plenty.

My iPhone also showed question marks.

Meanwhile our chief executive closed the office and told us to all have a long weekend :)

I'm sure the chances are low! There were a lot of people and I'd only have been in camera range for a few seconds.

A guy dropped his pants behind the reporter doing the live segment from Whakatāne, I'm sure that wasn't @Behodar!
