KiwiNZ:
Sharing information is a big difference to taking someones creative work.

No it is not.

All current scientific knowledge and all our culture is the creative work of billions of people for thousands of years.

So you are saying if you wrote an Application , spent many months coding it you are OK for people to just take it without paying you?

It called Open Source. You might have heard of it.

It's so popular, most of the internet is running on it. And a lot of smarphones. And probably your TV inside 2 years.

Those who file share illegally are just free loaders.

No they are not.

If say MS Office was made available by Microsoft for download at say $20 people would still obtain it illegally for nothing.

If a person was never going to buy it in the first place, how then do you consider it a lost sale?

The presumption that 100% of pirates would have purchased their pirated film is not only without robust science behind it, it is also logically fallacious and patently ridiculous.

But if the person didn't need the product enough to buy it, why then should they just obtain it for free?

If you release said Application under the GPL then that is fine if you don't then you are still saying people are free to take your work free of charge and you live on the DOL?

People even steal GPL code, I've experienced it first hand. These kinds of people have no respect for anyone else and is who should really be targeted.

And open source isn't even an argument.

People who code for open source programs, open office etc do it by choice with the full knownledge that it is for free, there is no expectation of commercial gain (unless through add on components, malware etc). The same can not be said for microsoft etc

Has the Organised & Financial Crimes Agency of NZ web site been DDOS'd? I cant get to it.

http://www.ofcanz.govt.nz

This agency should be provided with black Chevy Tahoes to ride around in to hint to the New Zealand public who they really answer to.

Obsequious hypocrite

KiwiNZ: Do the Crime do the time. Why the heck should the NZ Government waste it's finite resources fighting extradition for non-citizens.

They should return to the US and fight on their own account in the US courts.

What crime was that exactly?

sen8or: ** Disclaimer - I own a video shop****

Kudos for the admission.

"Partial truth" of the matter is that the victims are more often than not a lot closer to home, local businesses (video shops, game and music retailers etc) who all have their own responsibilities, financial or otherwise to meet who are missing out on the ability to sell/hire the product to "you" because you've already obtained it free of charge.

The concept of laws designed to protect the income streams of companies is called "Corporate Welfare" and it is the biggest form of welfare in the USA.

Should we ALL be allowed to have special laws to protect our income? Should we also shut down The Warehouse in case it also impacts your profitability?

There is always the argument that "you" would never have purchased it anyway, but if it hadnt been obtained "illegally" then how else would you have watched/played it?

The answer is simple. They would not have watched it - and you STILL would not have gotten any money for it.

There was a time when I used to get really pissed off at people walking down the new release wall saying "ive got that on the hard drive", but then they rented something different and still spent $10 - $20 on movie hires, so was it "lost money" or not, not a yes/no answer in my opinion.

It should interest you to know that one of the most rigorous studies into internet piracy to date shows that pirates buy 2 or 3 times more (official) films and music than do non-pirates. Pirates are the biggest buyers of media.

Typically, this result has been ignored by the industry as it does not fit in with their carefully orchestrated bid to shore up their failing business model and turn back the clock.

I cant believe that crook and wannabe hacker got residency in the first place, he had a bad record since the 90s. And now NZ has to spend money to defend this resident.  He deserves every penalty he can get.

marmel:
How many us would go out and steal a video or item of software from a store?

Thousands every week, just ask The Warehouse.

Probably not many but there is no difference between doing that and downloading it from a server for free.

Yes there is.

Theft means the owner of the item no longer can use it.

Copying means two people can now benefit from it.

Also, there are laws to protect "your income", things like minimum wage, compulsary / statutory holidays, minimum working conditions etc, how about we scrap all of those at the same time "cause they are outdated and broken". That way I can cut my wage bill in 1/2, have people work everyday of the week, no paid holidays, and if they start to complain or are a crap workers, I can fire them and there be no questions asked.

If I had a machine that 'photocopied' 3D objects, what would I loose by copying MY sandwich for you?

The bakery that bakes the bread would lose out on the sale of the bread because you chose to copy it, as would the dairy factory that would have otherwise had the opportunity to sell some butter if it weren't for you copying it.

That is their own fault. They should have a photocopier too.

Ofcourse, the photocopier company insist and spend millions of dollars on telling people that they can't control what people do with their photocopiers and therefore shouldn't bear any responsibility for their actions, even if an average household had enough photocopying capacity to service a latge commercial area?

Wouldn't it make more sense to just use the photocopier to make copies of itself and give one to each person in the country?

They could then photocopy all their needs - food, power (solar cells), medicine, car parts, etc. as needed. It'd also have the benefit of being less wasteful compared to what we do now, more immediate, and more robust.

Employment would become a hobby and un-necessary for your well being.

Sounds like a great idea to me...

But i digress.....

No, you didn't.
