Hi All,

Does any one has had to request for Urgent Citizenship application due to some unforeseen reasons? I have looked through Criteria for urgent requests and as below mentioned.  Would like to hear some advise on how to approach it and how long does it take for them to process. Thanks.

a bit of background:

Applied end Dec 2021

Reason to expedite my child's NZ citizenship: need to travel out of the country to visit elderly great grandmother (95 years old) whose health is deteriorating (hospitalised since early Jan 2022).  Obtained letter from the hospital as proof.  To complicate the situation, my child's current passport expires in July 2022 (expiring) and unable to renew further and have the letter to support that.  Do not want the child to end up stranded out of country after leaving and cannot return.

Extracted from the website:

The Citizenship Office will consider whether you need citizenship:

  • to travel for a medical emergency
  • to represent New Zealand
  • for work or deployment
  • for humanitarian reasons

Got an approved email today. I applied online last year, March 31, 2021. I received email for details confirmation last week, March 21, 2022.

My citizenship became effective last Friday. Once I received the certificate Friday morning applied for my passport around midday same day (urgent option) it arrived today.

So from start of application 26th Feb 2021 to now, is around 13 months and 1 week.

Just thought id put a final update on. This forum has helped with people offering support and sharing their journeys.

Wish you all well.

Hi All

Just wondering how accurate is the presence calculator tool. When I checked in Feb The message was "You don't meet the presence requirement "

In March The above message plus "Check back in April "

In April message plus check back in May

I had this issue back in May 2021 so I called immigration and obtained a printout by email of all my ins and outs to prove my presence in NZ. i have been here since 1972 but the calculator said I did not qualify.

Disgusting if they say shamelessly - 2 months - to print a certificate.

Meanwhile any one with April or May month processing the DIA reckons that they have started processing May month ones as well.

I applied May 2021 and not a peep from them yet!

The whole system is being run by crooks - there is no sign they are about to clear the backlog by mid-2022. As far I know all conditional approvals happen on the day you apply and your application gets accepted in the system only final checks from agencies and police is needed - DIA does not do anything in it. This was in 2019 the DIA personal explained me the process when I got my citizenship.

This is policy of needlessly torturing people for over 1 year in last 2 years in the name of Covid seems clearly to have come from the 'TOP' of the government hence DIA's do not care attitude. If they can allow permanent residency to 300K temp visa holders just on the basis of being present on Sep2021 - cant understand why it takes so long to process citizenship for most law abiding - genuine tax paying permanent residents who have fulfilled all the criteria over last 5 years.

They played the Covid card well. With the housing problem, cost of living, crime, homelessness, significant increase in beneficiaries and gang members they know people will get feed up and leave if they can, the great brain drain.

They figured out that a highly skilled migrant will run away the moment they get that black piece of document to OZ and delaying them as long as humanely as they can is the only way to keep them until things improved if ever they will. They were succesful with my wife and technically with me.

I alwys advocated to my wife that it's the best strategy for us to move. She is a nurse so it should just be a breeze for us to move to a 2nd tier city in OZ, for her to earn atleast 30% more and working extra hard will actually put more money in your back pocket while the cost of living is relatively lower and the housing price is more realistic. Then I will find my own niche.

But NO she convinced me to put our life savings to a turn key house which is till to be built. I know she is having 2nd thoughts now seeing the interest doubled from 3% to 6% as she speaks more about OZ now.
