They played the Covid card well. With the housing problem, cost of living, crime, homelessness, significant increase in beneficiaries and gang members they know people will get feed up and leave if they can, the great brain drain.

They figured out that a highly skilled migrant will run away the moment they get that black piece of document to OZ and delaying them as long as humanely as they can is the only way to keep them until things improved if ever they will. They were succesful with my wife and technically with me.

I alwys advocated to my wife that it's the best strategy for us to move. She is a nurse so it should just be a breeze for us to move to a 2nd tier city in OZ, for her to earn atleast 30% more and working extra hard will actually put more money in your back pocket while the cost of living is relatively lower and the housing price is more realistic. Then I will find my own niche.

But NO she convinced me to put our life savings to a turn key house which is till to be built. I know she is having 2nd thoughts now seeing the interest doubled from 3% to 6% as she speaks more about OZ now.

That is bound to happen if a government does not know how to run a country normally. Had they processed it in normal 2-3 months no skilled migrant would get a whiff of migrating again from his settled life. A country needs to exude confidence out of its strengths and New Zealand is a STRONG country only being run by an extremely incompetent government 🤬. An insecure country will only make a skilled immigrant feel less secure and if there is a big magnet next door like AUS attracting migrants then God bless.

Still believe a lesser number of migrants will leave for Oz but even those who don't they can't plan holidays just waiting endlessly for effing DIA Commissar will drop him an email for anything what he likes.

We need to organise and drop emails to the opposition leaders hoping they can at least raise this issue of DPRK style working of DIA. What say guys?

Note: Interest rates are about to rise in Australia too and Sydney Melbourne and Brisbane are already over heated - Crime has picked up as well. Adelaide and Perth yes are attractive. But with higher tax rates and super deduction the salaries balance out to Kiwi levels but yet job market is much bigger and Oz companies are not looking out for Hercules like Kiwi ones do. Kiwi ones are looking for one who can work all day less pay and should know everything under the sun.

I don't agree with this. For a highly skilled migrant, they would be silly to go for NZ citizenship as a back door into Australia where they become a second tier citizen with none of the protections of even a PR. If the ultimate goal is to move to Australia and maybe have NZ as a backstop, the smarter way to do it would be to go for Australian citizenship - especially as once you have Australian PR, you're automatically entitled to NZ PR as well.

It's not entirely true that the housing prices are more realistic, and the cost of living is very much subjective. As a nurse she would have some advantages though, such as easy access to regional sponsored visas (if you don't mind being 3+ hours drive from a big city you can live quite comfortably on a lot less while actually getting paid quite well as a medical professional - the regions scream out for those people. It would be the same in NZ though) and generous pre-tax benefits (i.e. swapping $400 a week of her pre-tax salary onto a visa card to use for groceries and fuel).

My timeline/story so far:

  • 15 May 2021 - Applied on-line
  • 25 March 2022 - Request for more info received - provided same day

    • They wanted a colour scan/photo of my birth certificate?? Pretty sure I submitted my birth certificate with my original application, surely my application would have bounced without it.  Either way, the original is in monochrome.  Took another pic of it on a red background.  You want colour? You got it.
    • They wanted English Evidence.  This made me giggle.  I sent them a scan of my School C and UE qualifications (including passing in English) as issued by the NZ Department of Education in 1982 and Universities Entrance Board in 1983 respectively.
  • 26 March 2022 -  (a Saturday!?) Request to confirm personal details received - replied same day
  • 12 April 2022 (today) - Approval email received (with boilerplate text around no ceremony, certificate within 2 months etc.)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Those are fairly short departures, so won't have much impact. As per the detailed breakdown I posted in #2747604, you can apply for citizenship four years and 240 days after you arrive in New Zealand, provided that you have spent 240 days in each of the previous five years in the country legally as a permanent resident. Five years as a hardline rule is only quoted by the department because applicants are more likely to get the presence requirement wrong when calculating using the full legislative requirements.

By my reading, you became eligible to apply for citizenship 24 days ago, on 20 March 2022.

I applied 26 May 2021 and nothing from them yet, I have only been here continuously since 1972 yet their 'location calculator' said I was not qualified so I got a list of my ins/ outs to/from NZ from the Immigration Dept.

I have sent it email to DIA and they reply with diffirent timeframe and ceremony date!!

It s showing 15 month and no ceremony because of Covid at DIA website, Not sure what s going on ???

Kia ora

Thank you for your email.

Most applicants will be advised of the outcome from their application within 11 to 13 months of submitting a correct and complete application.

After your citizenship application has been approved, it normally takes between 3 to 4 months for you to be allocated to attend a ceremony in your area.

The waiting time to be allocated to a ceremony is dependent on where you live and the schedule of the local council.

The Department will send you a formal invitation two to three weeks before your ceremony date with details of the time and venue.

For any other enquiries please reply to this email, visit our website at https://www.govt.nz/browse/nz-passports-and-citizenship/nz-citizenship/, or contact us by phone.

Nāku noa, nā
