As a matter of discussion (and not to spoil the story) I am amazed how much food Bilbo Baggins had in his larder and was able to feed so many dwarves! A lot of food for one Hobbit to stock pile and not worry about going to waste :-)

One thing that made my wife and I say the same thing at the end of the movie was "If they had access to those birds, why the hell did they walk so far and why did it put them at the top of that tower and make them climb down!

The same thing was said about them in LoTR....and of course there's reasons outlined in the books that they don't go into in the movie.... but the gist of it is that the journey itself is the reward.

You're kidding, right? I'm sure it is possible to simplify any film into a sentence like that.

It was the clearest 3d I've seen. The alleged hyper-realism is a good thing. Atmos I did not notice but the sound was very clear.

Nah I thought the 'hyper realism' pulled me out of the movie on a fair few occasions, probably the exact opposite of what most film makers would be hoping for.

I watched it at the embassy in 2d as a work event.

One week later I went back with my wife to watch the HFR 3D version at the embassy. OMG, it was almost like I was watching a different movie. I was absolutely riveted, the picture was amazing and the sound blew me away.

Thanks PJ, you and the team have created magic as far as I am concerned.

Agree, I found the 3D really off putting and wish I hadn't bothered.

I really enjoyed LOTR but found the Hobbit pretty boring

The book is really good, and far better than the LOTR book. But spreading it out into 3 movies wasn't a good idea. Although I am sure it makes sense financially for them, as they get 3 bites of the cherry. WIll be interesting to see if they win any of the big awards at the academy awards in future years.
Also rewatched some of the LOTR films on tv2 (don't know why they aren't in HD). I thought that there were parts that looked quite fake. I think technology has moved on quite a bit since they were made almost a decade ago.

Aftse seeing The Hobbit my two kids watched the Trilogy EE versions over three nights. I didn't sit through them all but did watch some segments and they made more sense to me the second time around. I guess it helped that the first time I watched them (all at the Embassy) I did fall asleep through bits of all of them :-)

We watched them all in HD with 5.1 audio on my home theatre system with 1080p projector on a 100" screen. Pretty good cinema experience but of course no match for The Hobbit 48fps 3D and Dolby Atmos.

Well I finally saw it earlier this week with my wife and we had to agree...

This is a properly BIG MOVIE.

Sadly didn't get the Atmos experience locally in Auckland, but the HFR 3D was very very well done, and I really appreciated the smoothness of the motion.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
