currently use a qnap ts212 nas, however the Thecus would be great for the old boy, he hasn't been able to convince someone, its worth shelling out for one :p , all of us guys that are married know what I mean haha
Here "The Server", runs openSUSE, has er about 10TB of storage, mythTV backend (terrestrial and satellite tuners), xbmc mysql database, Crashplan backup to cloud and from friends, Squeezebox server, something to do with sabnzbd... If I won I'd move my photos over to it for a bit extra safety.

My current storage solution is an Airport Extreme, with an external USB 2.0 HDD plugged in... It is painfully slow, and Time Machine isn't doing what I need really, it's just not 100% stable. I'd like to test a USB hub on it... but ultimately, a proper NAS is what I'd love in our household.
I am currently using my gaming PC with 2x3TB HDDs to store Movies,Tv, Music, for in home streaming. It is not very power friendly vs a NAS as I have to leave my PC on alot where as it probaly wouldnt need to be on all the time if I had a NAS. I keep meaning to get one but always forget :)
My current* solution is a couple of external 2TB drives connected to an RT-N16. Both drives are already full, and it's terribly slow at I/O: only a couple of MB/s writing and a tad quicker reading (but not quick enough for most of the 1080p video that we have)... and it gets worse if there's any other network activity.
*Not really, since it's still unplugged since we moved.
I currently use an old laptop running Ubuntu Server 14.04 for a torrent/media sharing. It only has a 160GB hard drive so I copy old files to an external WD usb hard drive. The screen bezels were falling off so a bit of duct tape did the trick.
I currently use a WD Mybooklive 2tb NAS. It does its job great but I'm limited to its 2tb. I'll need to upgrade to something more sizable soon. The N2310 would do nicely, I would throw in a pair of 4TB WD Greens
