One would be 17 SP and the return is 15

This is estimate on AirNZ page under Potential earnings. Only thing I can see if different is CHC - AKL is 737 and AKL - CHC is A320
Same price flights but different times of the day.

It's probably a different booking class.
The simple reality is you can never actually fully understand the SP system now - it's far too complex even for Air NZ to understand it.
I can give you a classic example of a $704 Works fare to Hawaii earning 46 SP and yet the $1004 Works Deluxe gives 47 SP.
khull: Does anyone know of a tool to check the class bookings easily?
Also Air NZ has a domestic sale at the moment (and yes I am mileage running)
