The question still remains as to how the business is going to be made profitable.

When Mediaworks eventually rid themselves of their television business I assume the news gathering function will go with it, so perhaps there is an opportunity for Stuff to sell news bulletins for Mediaworks to use on their radio stations.

I would prefer a form of subscription, for add free news/video, or filtering options, or some additional content. I seldom watch video with adds first.

Don't like the tip jar/begging bowl approach. But perhaps it's driven by the market space and competitors.

The way I see this ... Stuff had hit rock-bottom before the buy out. The only way is up from here. Excited to see what they come up with without the shackles and safety net of a big corporate.

If I could invest a little, I would. Just to give them a chance of pulling off a transformation.

It will be interesting to see indeed. You can't really fault what Todd Scott has achieved with the NBR (albeit Stuff is a different market and different scale).

I wish them well - much prefer Stuff to the Herald, so if we have to lose one my vote goes to keeping Stuff.

Aside from the annoyingly hard right opinions/commentators, the NBR at its normal subscription prices is simply a rip off given that these days typically there are only a few new articles a day. I've humoured them with a subscription as my work is a corporate subscriber and they were offering one for employees of such corporates to read at home/when outside the corporate network etc for $8 a month. I wouldn't consider paying more for their content.

In terms of Stuff, I am excited to see what will come of this. Without the unrealistic corporate expectations of a high profit, Stuff's quality can only go up. This country desperate needs a newspaper-centred outlet that doesn't spend all its time throwing out poisonous bile like the Herald's lineup of regular "columnists/idiots.

I'd happily consider supporting Stuff if they moved to a UK Guardian type model where an annual subscription gives you access to ad-free content.

Offering a paid model that streamlines the the user experience and access to news is much more user-friendly than putting some items behind a paywall (which just frustrates, rather than encourages).

Off the top of my head, I'd happily pay, say, $99 per annum for access to a premium app and website experience (ie. around $2 per week to remove ads, not the Herald's ask of $5 per week to access their paywall).

Disagree on the NBR. Politically yes their views don’t align with my own, but sometimes it’s good to be challenged and read other viewpoints. I find their analysis and reporting quite interesting and insightful actually - although yes the quantity is lower than it used to be. Note that we have a corporate subscription through work so I’m not paying for it, and I do think it’s overpriced for the value you get.

My comment was really more around the ownership structure and model though.

Totally agree the Herald is vile and mostly offers up opinions masquerading as news.
