Quite possibly. The baby was overdue and the obstetrician suggested a good hot curry might get things moving, otherwise we were looking at inducing. It could be totally coincidental, but we think there might have been something in it.

I would be happy to see smoking banned in any public places. It's unhealthy to bystanders, promotes/normalises smoking, and it's unpleasant to be around.

There is research (see US insurance research institute) that suggests smokers have a collision rate 150% higher than non-smokers. So there might be case for banning smoking while driving. It's also possible smoking is simply strongly correlated with other risk factors.

I have no problem at all with people smoking in their own property. The effect on their kids does concern me, but there are much more severe risks to kids than smoking. I would prefer to see tobacco remain legal and taxed heavily.

If we do wish to manage total cessation then an annual increase by one year of the age limit might do that, combined with an ongoing increase in taxation.

Yeah I could live with that, a ban in public places and in cars where kids are.

I would support this if the ban on public places included designated smoking areas. People can make smoking into a moral issue all they like, but it is an addiction and smokers who cannot feed that addiction at regular intervals get very miserable. People can get on their high horse and say good, they deserve to be miserable for having such a noxious habit, but I find that rather unenlightened. If there are specific places where smokers know they can light up, they are less likely to do so where it impinges on others, such as in office building doorways and public places. And those who suffer around smoke would know which areas they should avoid.

People can get on their high horse and say good, they deserve to be miserable for having such a noxious habit, but I find that rather unenlightened. If there are specific places where smokers know they can light up, they are less likely to do so where it impinges on others, such as in office building doorways and public places. And those who suffer around smoke would know which areas they should avoid.

As someone with a personal knowledge of addiction (Not me) I can tell you I don't hold the position that anyone should suffer unnecessarily. That said, there are lots of addictive substances and just because it's addictive doesn't mean it shouldn't be banned. Cocaine isn't legal, neither is meth. If you have ever seen someone withdrawing from that, THEN you know what miserable is. It's possible to quit cigarettes, people do it every day, and for varying reasons. If it were banned or made more expensive, a good portion of the population would get all the motivation they need. There are obviously lots of exceptions.

I am ok with designated smoking areas, if they are contained. What I see more than anything else, is smokers who literally don't give a toss about what impact they have on others.

This is a moment worth remembering. We actually completely agree on something! A point made earlier is that some people are just a-holes. But that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with smoking. You have jerks with cigarettes and jerks with other things. They are just jerks and should be dealt with appropriately. I have smoking friends and I know they would respect an arrangement like this. They have no wish to be a source of discomfort to other people.

Duty free cigarette and tobacco smuggling into the UK from continental Europe has been going on since I can recall. The UK had very punitive taxes on tobacco products at a time when places like Greece, Spain etc did not. The dodgier types used to hire vans and drive down from the Grim North to load up and hope not to get caught coming back so they could hawk them round the less salubrious pubs and clubs in holdalls and flog them at half the cost of legit ones.

I'm pretty sure I've even seen old episodes of The Bill cover it :D

The "chop-chop" has been an issue here since the early 90's.

Ciggies here are about $25 for 20 (I saw a guy paying for some in a servo 3 weeks ago and nearly keeled over!)

Vaping can help stop this. It gives people an option.

Blimey. That really is a lot: (I just looked it up) about $6 more than the UK price currently. I recall buying 200 Marlboro Reds when I was a student for $30 at current exchange rates! That was 25+ years ago though. Long since grew out of that foolishness. Even my mother, who smoked all the time I have known her, suddenly gave up when my father died 3 years ago.
