Aredwood: They also (in the USA at least) have a supplier diversity program. Which helps smaller suppliers get their goods into Costco stores. https://www.costco.com/supplier-diversity.html Which should be a great help for the many small companies in NZ.

I'm always a bit suspicious when supermarkets no longer stock a perfectly good NZ made item. Lately it's been bothering me that more and more shelf space is being dedicated to overseas made no brand cheapo products. I actually doubt many people are buying those but the supermarkets want to increase margin and pressure local suppliers.

I doubt Costco will save all those maybe one or two.

I think I mean unknown overseas cheapo brand not no brand. The ones that are so awful you buy once and never again.

That in countries CostCo operates in outside of the US they don't offer within-country shipping?
(E.g. CostCo Sydney won't ship to Wollongong).

Or that CostsCo US don't ship internationally.

The former. Costco Parramatta won't ship to Wollongong or Newcastle for example. I was slightly wrong in that select countries such as the UK they do too, but I would posit that Australia and New Zealand would be basically the same to them, so don't expect shipping as an option.

Thanks. Log haul freight is much, much cheaper in Australia than in NZ so I'm guessing that alone would preclude shipping.

Countdown seem to be the worst for reducing the number of NZ made products in their shops, opting for Australian products.

There doesnt seem to be a single NZ-Made aerosol product at Countdown, whereas heaps at PaknSav. This includes flysprays, air fresheners, non-sticks, etc.

No NZ-Made mens grooming products - No more Primal Earth.

I haven't forgotten, that is exactly the type of literacy I was meaning. Focusing on the headline price instead of cost per unit. It only costs "more" when you are first starting up - once you're up and running it costs less. So you don't start with a massive $1,000 bulk shop, you gradually build up your stocks.

Exactly. First week, you buy a few bulk items. Next week do the same. You'll still have to go to your weekly shop supermarket for a while too, but in time that will diminish.

Thought I might as well post this as well. It is about a couple who got married in a Sydney Costco store.

I doubt that anyone has ever gotten married at a Countdown store.

As if being married inside a supermarket - any supermarket - is a badge of honour...

Yeah, because it's so much more honourable to burn through more money than you need to.

This is fantastic news. It will take some magic to get the supply if they source from NZ - supermarkets may put pressure on manufacturers/growers not to supply, but this could be the Warehouse Extra that never got off the ground. All for this, and will support it - supermarket prices are a joke right now. Yes I understand fresh stuff is very seasonal, but cheese from Denmark at $20 when I saw the same thing in Tesco UK for £1.50 is just tacky.

If they do, I think they will likely be in for a world of hurt under the Commerce Act, as that would be pretty blatant anti-competitive behaviour.

I wish them luck. Anything that might shake up our cozy little supermarket duopoly, and bring more choice into our market, has to be good for consumers.
