Mrsd411:

Have you heard anything yet? We applied in early January 2021 and heard nothing yet.

Got the standard response after a couple of days. So, looks like, will be a while before a case officer is assigned.

Thank you for your email.

Your application has not yet been assigned to a case officer.

We are unable to provide a specific date as to when your application will be allocated to a case officer.

Most applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application within 9 to 14 months of submitting a complete and correct application.

If there are any issues with the application, the case officer will be in contact with you.

If your application is approved, we will email you to confirm your approval for citizenship.

Thanks for that.  I'm hoping that they approve ours in the time-frame given in our email we received when we applied which was 5-10 months.  Guess I'm being impatient and after living in NZ since 2008, I should know better. 🤣

Yeah the timeframe seems to be getting worse and not better. When I applied it was 6-8 months, I've been waiting 9.5 now. I think a few applicants on here mentioned 8-10 and now it's jumped to 9-14. Crazy.

there is some petition going on regarding wait time I do not know if it is going to help but might be worth to sigh ... or at least spread the word

So looking at my past emails from DIA they appear to only look at my file once a week.

I got an email yesterday querying why my current citizenship is different to my birth country. I sent the answer but was thinking this really has no relevance to the application. I've been a permanent resident legally in the country for the required time.

Anyway I guess I'll wait another week for a reply.

I applied in the last week of October 2020 - Haven't heard anything yet. I called in Feb and May - both times I was told my application is in the queue and had not yet been allocated to a case officer.

Maybe they think you're a serial citizen?

Often those sorts of things are to see if your responses remain consistent each time you're asked - TSA in the US are notorious for asking the same question four times in different ways which many people think is them being idiots, but is actually a test to see if they can catch you out with a mistake in your story.

Unrelated-

Fun fact - I just received a response from a Senior Advisor at DIA confirming that a person may in fact apply in their fourth year of residency, as long as they meet all other criteria (they do warn that The presence calculation is calculated backwards from the date the application is lodged; as per the legislation “during the 5 years immediately preceding the date of the application”, so if an applicant chooses to apply prior to the end of the fourth year, the presence calculation will include time that they were not entitled to reside indefinitely. This would be added to any travel outside of New Zealand in the first year period and may impact on their ability to meet the presence requirements).

They're requesting an "apply during your fourth year" scenario be added to the website. I'm actually quite impressed at their responsiveness, and their willingness to proactively update their guidance to reflect the rules.

It's a looong time since I was naturalised so pardon me for asking - is there any particular rush?

Apart from , I dunno, standing for parliament or something, don't PRs get the same benefits as a citizen?

You already have at least one other passport so you can still travel, right?

Quite right no particular rush but the problem is that the service is getting worse. It used to take a few months and now it's taking almost a year. Given someone needs to be here for 5 years as a legal resident it should be a formality like getting PR . Maybe a few more questions but really they should have access to all of your details - good and bad.

In my situation it's getting more troublesome to travel back to NZ on a different passport. I always have hassles coming back to NZ becuase I don't have an NZ passport and my current passport is not my country of birth. Last trip I almost wasn't allowed to board my flight back from the US becuase my layover in Sydney was more than 8 hours which then requires a visa (it's an esta type visa but this wasn't a requirement until recently AFAIK).

We've already covered how popular new NZ citizens are when they do that. If you've come to NZ as a skilled migrant, hopefully you're already comfortable.
Oz is not a very attractive option at the moment with Australia flip flopping in and out of lockdowns.

Anyone dead set on such a pathway will have to wait for their golden ticket. The privilege is worth the wait.
