Why does a toilet wait to be blocked until a long weekend?
And why are toilets not all standard, when it comes to seat fittings?

And why can't you easily get a soft-close lid to fit our new and quite expensive toilet?

And why does it cost $800 to have a new toilet fitted?

Remember back in the '80s and '90s, and even early 2000s, when the government and schools were all pushing that people needed degrees? That university was the only thing to do after high school, and anything else was for dummies?

I think that might go a long way to answering your question...

Why does a new quite expensive toilet not have a soft-close lid already?

Was the new toilet fitted in the same place as the old reusing connections or was it moved? My guess is the plumber saw how much the toilet cost and charged accordingly.

And who in their right mind thought that in-wall cisterns are a good idea?

Someone with form over function as their priority. I'd like to point you towards one of the largest companies in the world... Apple.

In a bathroom with limited space, it's an attractive option. I'd suggest the number of issues that occur in a well installed high quality in wall cistern system is pretty low.

Have inherited them twice in houses we've owned. Maintaining them is a total pain in the arse. Just replacing seals and washers requires tiny but powerful double jointed wrists. Avoid.

Yeah, I mean, I agree, it's form over function, but I guess everyone is a bit different. People people pay people to do stuff like that, so the impact to them is minimal vs the benefit.

I guess I should qualify that - it was expensive to us
It's a fairly standard Caroma loo, but as we found out after it was fitted (it's a like-for-like replacement, getting rid of the old, blocked, leaking almond-ivory loo with a new version in white) - it came with a lid/seat which is fairly ordinary, but because of the overall design, the standard soft-close loo seats don't fit properly.
I have no idea why a loo that costs $320 out of the box doesn't have a soft-close lid. It's annoying.

The range of toilet prices is quite astounding - you can get them for as little as $120 or as much as a couple of grand, depending on your preferred throne, or your specific fittings.

The plumbing nearly all lined up - with the exception of a now-redundant bit of plumbing that has been removed and we're left with a small hole in the wall - which I have temoprarily patched for now.

They do? Good lord, no wonder this whole place is going to hell in a handcart. Next thing people won't even be able to feed themselves...

Does anyone know where this depot is? I assume in Hamilton somewhere, I have tried googling, and putting in tracking number into likely providers Aramex, NZ Couriers etc.

Try tracking it on imile and fasthorse. Seem that things get assigned to them when they cant deliver and they hand over to nz couriers or aramex eventually, and in the case of po box delivery then those guys hand over to nz post once they have sat on it for a couple of days.

Are all under bench water filter cartridges the same? Does anyone have a recommendation on a filter cartridge they like?
