My application was approved 22/3/23 and waiting for ceremony. Anyone from Wellington waiting for theirs as well? How long is the the current wait for ceremonies in Wellington region? Cheers!

I wonder how long it took for your application to get approved. Can I ask when did you apply?

It seems to be really random how long it takes to start to review the application. My application has been submitted for months but still not even been picked up for review yet.

I just want to add a data point to this. I applied in April 2022 and have heard nothing until a few days ago. Last Friday, I had an email from a case officer that I needed to provide a Statutory Declaration witnessed by a JP that I've been trans for a "reasonable" period of time.

  • Citizenship asks the applicant how long they have maintained their current sex/gender identity to establish:

    • that the identity has been maintained for a reasonable period of time, and
    • the applicant doesn't frequently change their mind about their gender identity

This is in addition to all the documentation originally asked for when applying, and wasn't mentioned anywhere in the application. As far as I can tell there is no official information anywhere about how long "reasonable" is. It seems like a pretty poor reason to be kicked way to the very back of the queue.

So if you have been waiting a long time, this might be the reason.

Sorry I can't answer your question, @Goldh.

Things have moved very fast for me, after not moving at all for a while. here is my timeline:

April 2022: Applied for citizenship

April 2023: Changed address (not sure if this is relevant at all, south island to north island))

June 8, 2023: Received note to provide JP-witness Statuatory Declaration re: gender.

June 12: Provided requested document.

June 16, 8:30am: Notice of Citizenship Approval

June 16, 10:00am (!!): Invitation to attend ceremony with date (June 26).

Barring unforseen circumstances, this time next week I'll officially be a kiwi. I'm so grateful its over, and I think they were making up for the huge wait by processing the second part so quickly (all the info says 1-4 months between approval and affirmation ceremony)

Hooray!

Just as an update - we finally manage to apply this past weekend - was pretty straightforward and the photo verification (touch wood) all passed.

The email we received said 5-10months so hoping for a quicker result.

My Mum has just done this and received the approval 2 weeks after application so thought the delays had been sorted. Or maybe hers was just a simple formality compared to others? Emigrated from UK in 1993, just never bothered to get citizenship and stayed as permanent resident. My brother is now living in Sydney and has a baby so she got it mainly so she can visit him without the extra admin (having to pay for a visa each time etc).

I should get around to it too. Been in NZ since I was 7 but still just permanent resident. Only benefit seems be making it easy to move to Australia (so my brother got it before leaving NZ) but have no plans to do so now I'm married to Wellingtonn girl whose whole family are here. Making it easier to leave feels like it defeats the purpose of citizenship but so be it.

We also thought should we or shouldn't we but reality is we from South Africa, and the last thing I want is for something to change in 15 years and making getting citizenship harder (we do have PR). That and we want to give up our RSA citizenship as the corrupt government are taking about taxing expats that still holds RSA citizenship.

Don't wait for NZ's version of Australia's 501!

I had been here for decades without doing so until a friend gave me a kick up the arse by saying legislation could change.

And not only for criminals, but law-abiding residents. E.g. only citizens get state pension or only citizens state pensions will get increase with residents pensions remaining at the same rate as when first claimed.

Who knows what may happen in the future.

Or your brother has an urgent need for you to join him in Oz - that's not the time to discover there's a weeks' long wait for the Visa you need.
Do it now!

With the amount of UK citizens living here I can't imagine there will be some sudden change of policy revoking my residency, and the Australian visitor visa with a UK passport is a 5 minute online application. But I do take the point, should get around to it whilst it's easy to do in case there's some time in the future it's needed and isn't. Citizenship plus passport is a reasonable chunk of money at a time things are pretty tight currently. Curious as to how my Mum got it approved within 2 weeks when others are still waiting a year for a reply though.
