The poor foolish girl. How can the university not at least once point out that backups are a good idea. So make sure your friends and family have backups. Heck Mozy is free for 2GB of data, or CrashPlan software will let them back up to their friends computers.
When I first read this article, the first thing I thought of was why didn't she backup her data to a) The cloud b) External HDD c) Both of the above. Poor girl, not a nice feeling to lose all of her hard work though. Just hope they find burglar and get her things back.

Pretty sure Google allows unlimited photo storage if you use Picasa, albeit at a reduced quality.

Until a few weeks ago I worked in the insurance industry and the "she'll be right" attitude extends well beyond electronic data. People just don't think bad things will happen to them, but as someone who was recently widowed at age 40, I can testify that they certainly do happen. Which is probably why I'm so risk-averse with my data. Especially since the memories contained in it are so very precious. All the drives in my old-skool Mac Pro back up to my Time Capsule. The boot drive also clones to a secondary bootable drive within the computer. Thirdly all the important data (documents, photos, movies) backs up to LiveDrive in the cloud. My work PC laptop backs up to an external hard drive and also all my important documents and files sync to OneDrive. My initial LiveDrive backup took about 3 months for around 350GB of data. It's better now that we have VDSL and my upload speed has improved by 800% :o)

I can't decide on which cloud to nine to ... So i think I'll research on which can make use of my gigatown upload the best ...
