Looks to be the same software. Makes the same request to a cron.php page and the scripts are all contained within geo_templates just like on 4tradeit

I noticed that other website bananas4free.co.nz is currently down.

It doesn't look good for 4tradeit either especially after all that publicity! Hardly any new listings..

Here's another new local alternative, Swoop. http://www.getswoop.co.nz/ Smartphone based, iOS and Android, when browsing shows distance of sellers so you can deal with people locally.

I initially thought this would probably be the way to go too - someone with the existing traffic volume in New Zealand like Fishpond or Mighty Ape starting up an auction section. It could probably be relatively basic to start with, so long as it fixed the things most Trade Me users think are broken, then expanded to a more full service offering over time. The problem would be that this would potentially cannibalise Fishpond/Mighty Ape's own sales...

So what you need is a site that gets a lot of traffic in New Zealand, but has no online sales component... someone like Stuff.co.nz. So if Fairfax started an auction site... Oh. $#!*.

Has the NZ Herald group of companies ever given it a shot? Or maybe Mediaworks?

Trademe started with only a handful of users too. Previously there was trading on the BBS message boards, Fidonet etc. I joined in December 1999 and there was only a couple of hundred users then.
