The Mazda3 Diesel is supposed to be a nice car (I think they have it in the 6 as well?) Bit more economical to run.

In your $40k range, a VW Diesel, or Skoda, would be good on the fuel, and comfortable if you can get one to fit budget.

I was only (half) joking about the Mazda3 MPS - I know they aren't sold new anymore, and they are manual, but man they are fun to drive. Zoom Zoom. :)

The new corolla hybrid, cant get more boring or reliable then a corolla

It won't be allowed either as it's classed as a small car. I really enjoyed driving the Corolla sedan as a rental.
Mazda 3 is likely to be ruled out on size too now I check the Aussie ANCAP website.

mudguard: Don't get me wrong, SUV's drive and handle well. It's more the ability to hide my luggage and the lower nature of a sedan.
My current dilemma is buying something mundane for $40ish and have cash in my pocket after two years or so. Or stretching to $50k and having something I'd really like to own after three years, but it may cost me personally $10k or so after 3 years.

Have you looked at the new Suzuki Vitara? Has a boot tray for hiding stuff (well 2 actually - there is a second tray under the boot), pretty low and handles like a car. Very good prices on the entry models (~30K). They also have 3.9% interest until 30th June. Good L/100Km too.

If they don't classify the mazda3 range as a medium size car, then good luck finding anything remotely reasonable sized.

Never trust anyone that has only spent a maximum of a week in a car. Normally on nice roads.

I recall this same conversation happening many months back! If I recall correctly, that was the previous gen 6 you're trashing?! I've got one of the current range which is, I'll admit, not terribly quiet (the mid-version revamp is supposed to be quieter though), but I'm completely happy with its comfort levels.

The 3 does come with the 2.2 diesel, but I think only in the top spec Limited range - same motor as in my 6, and certainly ideal for travelling the distances the OP's doing (as opposed to urban usage); it's economical (official combined figures around 5l I think?)  and is, I'm sure, the fastest to 100 of all the 3s.

The Mazda 3 does have some pretty good fuel economy specs, if you believe these specs. It is Medium sized. But does lack some features I would expect from a medium /family sized car, such as rear passenger lights, and rear controllable air vents.

Ha, I'm driving a Camry, absolutely nothing wrong with it, big, comfortable, pretty good on gas and attracts no attention. But actually owning one...

I thought it was going to be quite a fun exercise but it's proving more difficult than I thought. I'm still on the fence on going out of budget and getting something I would like to own after 3 years.

With the fixed per km reimbursement rate being low, and the high kms of the job, it may be worth doing the numbers on the hybrid.

It's not looking like a great deal with that reimbursement.

By the way was there a clause stating how often or when you need to replace the vehicle?

Hybrids appear cheap to own/opetate, but you still have the maintenance costs of a standard petrol engined vehicle plus battery maintenance costs.
Additionally with high daily mileage are you really getting the EV benefit or just delaying the time till you're using gasoline. (And then still need to recharge the battery bank)

Modern petrol /diesel vehicles can be very efficient

I was thinking hybrids are a little more suited to stop start driving, which I do in Auckland, but lose their benefits for higher speed driving.

I did the maths on diesel, and was surprised it was more expensive given the k's (40,000k pa) with a 4.4L/100km diesel vs 5.2L/100km petrol.

I'm guessing the car will need to be less than five years old (in terms of when it will be replaced) as that is the limit for purchasing a used vehicle.

Toyota 8 year/160,000km battery warranty in NZ. Unsure if that is commercial also. The engines tend to be lower maintenance.

Yep depends on terrain. No idea how to calculate that. Depends on time on the brakes. Agree it may be marginal in this case.

Dynamic:

dickytim: 0.72 is the maximum rate that a company can offer.

No, that is definitely not correct.  If interested in the subject, so some research into this.

The employer can offer more but they won't be able to claim it as a business expense unless:

- they can justify the higher rate by comparing to a reputable independen NZ source (e.g. AA); or

- prove actual costs

Otherwise my wife, who is self employed, would be able to claim $5 a km mileage rate, tax free, thus minimising the business profits and tax payable.

It was, and the reason for never buying another mazda ever. Plenty of other cars for us to choose from.

I stick by "never trust anyone etc..."

Unless they are out there putting 1000+ kms on that car in a week, they have no idea what the downsides of it are.

Fair enough if you're never going to do a road trip, but if you spend more than 2 hours (actually moving) in a car in a day, you want to know what it will be like like in a month.
