It would be, and if they could prove it, they'd be in trouble.

Proving it, though, is the hardest part.

I know that a certain electronics retailer puts a lot of pressure on their suppliers not to supply other retailers, or that those supplier have just 'chosen' not to supply the other retailers with their products all of their own volition.

It won't shake up the supermarket duopoly. At all. Costco is not a supermarket, or an alternative to one. You cannot do your weekly shop at a Costco. They supply bulk quantities of discretionary goods, and some consumer staple goods (bread, milk, eggs, cleaning supplies) and that's pretty much it. It also will provide no help to those on lower incomes as the consequence of everything being in bulk quantities is that while it's cheaper on a per measure basis, you have to buy more at once so it saves nothing.

I struggle to spend less than $100 AUD buying about 15 items - but don't have to buy any of those 15 items again for a month.

Neither Foodstuffs nor Progressive will be worried about Costco, because it's not a competitor to them. In Australia, it's done less to impact the supermarket duopoly (Woolworths/Coles) than Aldi has. And Aldi apparently has already given up on NZ plans.

And since it is opening at Westgate. The supermarkets will definitely try to raise objections under the Resource Management Act. And it will be providing competition for almost every other retail chain, as they all have stores in that area.

I went to one in the USA back (i'm sure it was costco), not realising it was members only. Loaded up the trolley, then they asked for my membership card haha.

Once they realised I was not local, they let me go ahead with my purchases. Pretty sweet deals! Still use the big duffel bag.

These days need to show your membership card to the greeter at front of store

If be interested to see what objections they could raise considering the area the Mayor and others were standing in to make the announcement is zoned for exactly this type of enterprise. There is a Mitre10 Mega, a Bunnings (under construction), a Pak n Save, a 'Homestyle Centre' (large format stores like Briscoes, Harvey Norman, etc). The same area is also mooted for the IKEA megastore.
Access is from the North-Western and Upper Harbour motorways at Hobsonville Road offramps. Which will be okay when they finally finish the motorway widening. There is also a transport hub on the plans.

I must say though after visiting multiple Costcos in America the wow factor subsided pretty quickly, but part of that was because the bulk items would be too difficult to pack in a suitcase to bring home! No such problem here as the site is literally within walking distance.

I was a bit disappointed when I visited the Aussie Costco, possibly because I had seen the ones in 'Merica, so I won't set my expectations for the local one too high.

Agreed. Not just to get more competition down here but if they don't we could well end up with a situation like the petrol prices, with the rest of the country's prices higher to compensate for the incumbents having to stay competitive in Auckland.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Whilst I agree, entirely, that it is good news, unless they build many more stores, it will have no effect outside Auckland. Indeed, it might have the reverse effect - the Duopoly losing money in Auckland might jack prices elsewhere to make up for it!

It is however a good start. Hopefully, Ikea next.

Cheaper tyres could be beneficial. Many quality tyres are severely overpriced in New Zealand, retailing at multiples of what they sell for in Europe..

Used Costco when we lived in the UK, its a place for bulk buying so you would only need to visit once every month or so. And load up!

You need to shop with an open mind and be able to quickly calculate if something is a bargain for you or not. We purchased a large wooden garden table and matching chairs for about half the price that a local retailer was offering an inferior product for.

We then discovered two things:

Costco don't offer a delivery service....
The stuff was far too big to fit into the car
Enterprising members of their staff will offer to deliver for a price
Items were delivered that day.

We still had the garden furniture and had to leave it behind when we moved to NZ.

I hope the discounted petrol has a knock-on effect, the North Shore of Auckland is getting silly pricey! Ever since two stations were closed due to the new transportation hub the prices now seem well off kilter.

The Albany Highway BP may help bring competition back, but the Gull self service in Hobsonville looks to have largely been ignored by the likes of Z.
