Back in the day, Even banks didn't even bother to verify check signatures, ( when they still existed) so expecting retailers to is probably a tall ask... :)

Check out operators are not forensic document examiners, if you really wanted to copy someones signature im sure you could get it close enough in a few hours.

Many years ago Mum got a cheque from a rental car company to refund her bond or whatever they called it. She took it into her bank and the teller noticed the cheque hadn't been signed. The dread started setting in anticipating a bunch of back and forward via the phone and post. The teller then said (paraphrased) 'I'll put it through anyway and we'll follow up if it's rejected. They don't tend to check signatures for cheques under $5,000'. Sure enough the bank cleared it - with no signature.

Guess someone determined the threshold of what that bank was prepared to accept covering a loss from fraud as a cost of business vs the cost of delays and checking signatures.

Interestingly, unlike the NW card, the new one does not require an 'authorised signature'.

I didn't even realise that that was there. Mine's blank.

Years ago my mum ran for the local council. She sent out a bunch of letters and had a team of friends signing her name at the bottom of them :)

I talked to a friend in the 'banking business', who said the signature is really just an extra piece of evidence in the event of a fraud/theft prosecution, viz. if card used fraudulently most crooks never take the time to emulate the signature, so if their handwriting doesn't match then it is additional evidence against them.

Since the demise of handwritten cheques, and with the majority of payment authorisations now being online/electronic, I have literally forgotten how to, or more likely lost the muscle memory of how to, sign my "official" signature as used on my passport and drivers license.

The last time I really needed to sign anything was three years ago on a Sale and Purchase Agreement and I had to practice for a while beforehand so it resembled the one I had put on my passport seven years prior.

New card arrived in the mail today, yay no signature required, and it was sent via DX Mail. New World must not have much confidence in NZ Post to deliver their mail.

Pretty sure that NZ post delivery DX mail to many residential areas, ..

DX will have offered NW a better rate than NZ Post

Physical plastic card with bar code, or scan a bar code from their app, as far as I can see.

The card has no chip in it, so no NFC functionality on that.

The whole "has to match" thing is irrelevant. Its the act of you doing it that counts.

Must be the banker from yester year in me (in the days where customers would come into a branch with their deposit book, fill in a withdrawal slip, sign it in front of me, then put their book under the UV light to compare the signatures). The part about banks not checking cheques under a certain value is 100% true, that was also one of my tasks at a bank for a short period (I think it was $1k or thereabouts back in early 90s).

We are meant to be 100% paranoid / protective around pin numbers, but signatures, clearly close enough is good enough

But back on topic - tried the password reset again, got link, changed password, tried to log in, still invalid password.

Might have to try one of the staff at local new world

I tried the QR code again tonight. It worked first time. The sign up process went pretty smoothly with just one hiccup.

I clicked confirming the data that had been retrieved from my existing account was correct, only to get an error informing me to enter a valid mobile number. The number listed was my landline and nowhere did I see any reference to requiring a mobile number.

Just waiting for the card to arrive so that I can enter the barcode details into SuperCards. I can't be bothered faffing around with opening another app every time I need to scan. I prefer the loyalty cards to be all in one place.
