When you start getting selective democracy it tends to be a slippery slope.

Complaining about students and oldies voting in a self interested way is overblown, practically everyone votes selfishly to some degree.

Actually it's not oldies I was talking about, mostly they have contributed to the tax system, they have experience and use common sense.

I understand the arguments against, but what value will WP bring to the Govt this 3 year period, he was voted in by students because he promised to write off student loans, something he shouldn't have promised since he has no ability to do it.

Yeah students certainly are very selfish. Just look at those 9000 student volunteers who helped in the Christchurch earthquake cleanup (February). They should have been going to paid employment instead to pay into the tax base to earn the right to vote.

Students prove their lack of common sense thinking they should study to improve their knowledge and skills in order to seek gainful employment, in order to contribute to society. Damn students!

I suppose to be fair, voting should not be allowed to the retired over 65 as they are no longer earning/contributing to the tax base. Also should take vote off people in hospital too.

My annual 4 figure IRD bills would like to beg to differ on your position students aren't contributing to the tax base!

Don't go getting yourself all wound up there friend, I wasn't accusing students of outright selfishness, I was talking about voting in self interest, and to be fair, there were plenty of people of other aged volunteers as well. I wasn't saying they have no value, and I wasn't saying they could never vote, I was simply saying that whist they are being educated, they postpone their right to vote. I didn't say they were never going to contribute, you are twisting my words.

Do you think people who are unemployed + taking a benefit should be allowed to vote?

Over 65's should be allowed to vote, they have earned the right and I don't have an issue with it.

For the record, I know of PLENTY of students who wholeheartedly agree with me.
