I have seen hawks pick up a pukeko though.

A raptor like a hawk can lift and fly with prey of only up to about half its own bodyweight. A pukeko is about the same, or greater, weight as a hawk - so it doesn't seem likely.

perhaps, but they do take them down here in Canterbury. They tend to drop straight down on top of them.

Strangely (hawk - what we call swamp harriers here) are listed as a predator for pukeko.

But I’m querying whether they pick them up and fly with them? If they drop straight down on top of them, maybe they stun the pukeko and rip into them there and then.

Baby Pukeko won't be a problem for a hawk.

I often see hawks eating Pukeko road kill or trying to take off with it. In one case I observed the hawk didn't get very far but it did manage to get the Pukeko off the road and on to the verge, luckily for the hawk.

During the year I see a lot of dead hawks squashed on the road, killed trying to eat roadkill. Now and then if I'm not in a hurry I move roadkill to the side of the road to prevent that. If you see a hawk on the road eating start slowing down because they really are slow taking off especially when they are eating.

Are all wipers more or less the same? My wife's Audi 2016 Avant needs new wipers, and wipertech and wurth come up advertising frequently, but they are quite pricey ($100 a pair).

Should I just go to Pepco?

Bosch Aerotwin are about the best I've found. Wipertech are a marketing company that happen to sell wiper blades - not saying they are bad, but not amazing.

What is with all the damned surveys lately? I have been doing some on-line shopping and other activities and I am being barraged by surveys wanting to know about my 'customer experience' or some such. I have had this occasionally in the past but now it is suddenly an avalanche. I am getting them from on-line shops here and overseas. I am getting them from my dentist and vet. I expect the next time I use a public convenience I will get one asking about my urination experience! What gives?

These surveys are not only annoying and often nonsensical, I am even getting ones that are garbled because the questions overrun the buffer. Some just get cut off in the middle. It is bad enough receiving these, but the senders can't even be bothered to make them coherent. It feels like it is all being directed by an out of control AI. Does anyone have any insights about this?

There is a push for software to do this engagement from many marketing places that are realizing that people don't need help to run adwords anymore because most companies have hired staff who can read words and click buttons.

Soliciting reviews is another big one that seems to be happening at the moment. But if your experience is crap then I will be reviewing it as such. I am wondering if the marketing companies keep details of who they ask and what they rate in order to only send invites to people that like to 5 star everything like its a begging uber driver, as I do not seem to get as many as other people I know do.

I wonder whether many of them actually look at the reviews. Maybe it’s a virtue-signaling thing to make you think they care.

I’ve seen a couple of requests lately that pop up as soon as you enter the website - and ask if you were able to do what you wanted to do. This is before you’ve had a chance to do anything. Bloody annoying and I give them a ‘1’ out of principle.

One of my credit cards use to offer a price guarantee/insurance.  If you paid for a product with card and saw the exact same thing cheaper within (I think it was) a month they would re-imburse the difference.  I tried to claim on it twice.  First time I had paid for the item about a third in cash, two-thirds card, claim got declined on that basis, I didn't get a request to take part in a survey.  Second time the goods were paid in full on the card, claim got accepted, I got asked to do a survey.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Did you "accidentally" complete the survey based on the first (declined) transaction?  😇

What’s the annoying bird that flies over our place in the middle of the night and sounds like a cross between a sick seagull, a goose and a crying child?

You Shop question.

I want to buy new brake and clutch levers for my motorcycle.

They are made and sold by ASV in California. I have a You Shop address in Oregon so I was going to send them there and then to me here.

I’ve not used You Shop for ages so I thought I’d just remind myself of their terms etc. I was somewhat confused by this part:

“All items purchased from overseas and shipped to your You Shop address will have 15% GST applied before it is sent to NZ. As a re-deliverer, You Shop collects this tax on behalf of the New Zealand government when you pay for shipping into NZ.

Note: 15% GST will be charged on the total value of your goods and on You Shop’s service fees. Check the GST on low value imported goods.

Parcels valued between NZ$400 and NZ$1,000

NZ Customs require a tariff item classification if your parcel or consignment is valued between NZ$400 and NZ$1,000. You Shop will conduct the tariff classification for a fee of NZ$55.00 excl. GST per parcel. This fee is charged to your You Shop account before your items are shipped to New Zealand. Please note this is in addition to any applicable GST and Duty charges for your item.

You don't have to pay Duty for items valued at NZ$1,000 or less.”

The levers are worth around NZD$500, plus shipping to NZ.

They are therefore well within the exemption on GST collection.

I am not clear from the above whether YS will add the GST anyway or only add it if the value is over NZ$1000.

Has anyone had experience that might shed light?
