SaltyNZ: Horses are pets, please don't eat your friend's horse. It is ok to suggest they get a donkey go with it as they make the sausages taste better, as long you are good at acting surprised when they tell you the horse is a pet.

If you go to your friends place and they say 'bring a plate,' they mean for you to bring it with food on it. Try not to put horse on it though.

I can bring som whale meat maybe?

Good question... what does it actually taste like?

Elpie:

If you come to my house you will never see shoes beside the front door unless other guests are also visiting. This is the same as with all my family and most of my friends. Shoes are taken off and put away.

My experience of NZ is the opposite - it seems like it is a tradition here to have a basket of shoes by the front door?  We've gone modern and chosen to go with a big green garden bucket full of shoes, the only problem is when it's a north-easterly storm and they all get rained on..

I highly doubt they would taste the same. But from what I understand kangaroo and antilope (or was it deer) seem to be pretty similar. Enough so that there has been made tests to check what kind of meat it is. Kind of the same scandal we have had over here with horse meat in various products.

We dont care about shoes at our house, long as theyre not covered in mud :) Leave them on, take them off, up to you...but if you take 'em off and have smelly socks, we wont hold back in telling you :-p

If Im visiting someone else, and I see their shoes at the door, 90% of the time Ill take mine off otherwise they stay on.

Things I didn't know before I moved here:

NZ is not one long Island, there's actually two with some water in the middle. I'm told there is allegedly a third Island somewhere too, but I've never seen it.

Do not freak out if you are invited to a "Dick Party". You are actually being invited to a "Deck Party" which is quite harmless (and fun)

I'd have mentioned the insane Give Way rule, but that was fixed last year.

Everything that is ever done isn't completed until someone has compared it to Australia (example: see this entire thread)

Enjoy your stay.

Yes. And did you know that New Zealand actually has two time zones?

Chatham Islands (UTC/GMT +12:45 hours)
Everywhere else (UTC/GMT +12 hours)

As with anything our relations with Australia depend on distance and audience.

Within NZ/Aus - we hate each other and compete with anything

Far from home - NZ/Aus = ANZAC = best buds

We have the same with the Danes and the Swedes. With the added animosity that they both have occupied us at some stage. Its just 100+ years since we were under Sweden and we were pretty close to a war to get rid of them ;)

But mostly all fun and games now, swedes have jokes about danes and norwegians, danes about swedes and norwegians and norwegians about swedes and danes. (But we have to be careful about swede jokes when out on town, they tend to be the waiters...)

But I guess people aren't completely used to it yet? Or was it the previous one that was hard to understand? I know I have not wrapped my head around it. Would you mind enlightening me?

Enjoy your stay.

Thank you, hope it will be a long and good one.
