cynnicallemon:
I think it would be a good idea to turn all those old Dick Smiths stores into brothels as a lot of shoppers got screwed (pricewise) in those shops.
Unique selling point could be light bondage using HDMI cables left behind...
As of today two out of the four ex Dick Smith Christchurch shops have new stores within.
Riccarton Mall now has the JB Hifi. It's been open for a few months.
Northwood now has a Pet Stock store. Part of a nation wide chain. I do not know how long it has been open.
The Palms Mall. Nothing doing yet. It still has the 'To Lease' signs all over the windows. Inside that shop there is a big pile of empty pallets and I saw one pallet with something that looked like ceiling panels or something similar. It looked as if it might be being used as a storage area for some refurbishing going on elsewhere in the mall, or it could be the start of a shop fit-out.
Hornby Mall. Nothing doing yet. It still has the 'To Lease' signs all over the windows just like The Palms shop. Completely bare inside it looks the same as two months ago. The front door had an A4 piece of paper saying 'Health 2000 next door.' whatever that meant because the Spark shop is next door!
This will be my last update in this thread as I fully expected all four locations to have new shops by now!
Oh, one other piece of trivia the old Dick Smith next to the swanky new bus exchange, is still there yet to be demolished. This one got closed in 2011.
Lizard1977:definitely BBBI drove past Palmy DSE store today, and it's been given a coat of dark green paint, and saw scaffolding up presumably to take down the existing DSE signage. Curious as to what's going in there - maybe Bed Bath and Beyond? The colour probably matches, but it would be a massive store for them, and they already have a store in the Plaza (unless they're moving out?)
Updating this thread even though I said I would not!
Northwood: Petstock pet food & pet products.
Riccarton Mall: JBHiFi Seems to be doing o.k. Lots of people in there whenever I go in.
The Palms Mall: 'For Lease' signs all over the windows still. Inside the windows they have put metal security screens. Maybe the mall management are using it as a storage area. On the website it is listed as a vacant shop.
The Palms ex Dick Smith is just outside the mall - about 50 metres from one of the main entrances & right next to the mall parking building. So not ideal but far from a crappy location.
The Hub Hornby: 'For Lease' signs on the windows. Absolutely the same as when I posted the Nov. 16 update. This empty shop is about 20 metres from one of the main entrances to the mall & I would judge it to be a superior location to the shop at the Palms. Interestingly, Spark who used be to right next door to the Hornby DSE, have now quit that shop & moved into the mall itself. The Spark shop was right at the entrance & looked to be a great spot.
That these two shops are still vacant after a year and one week suggests to me that retailing at a mall is a risky business what with the competition & high rents.
Quensgate Lower Hutt store is empty again, They had a pop up shop in over xmas due to the other end of the mall being shut with earthquake damage.
The old DSE shop next to the Chch. Bus Interchange is still there, waiting to be demolished. Wonder if it will make it to the 7th anniversary of the big quake in Feb. 2018? Plenty of other buildings still sitting around waiting to be demolished. Incredible!
George St, Dunedin is sitting empty still
K Rd in Auckland still empty..

Noticed today that Bed, Bath and Beyond Home Store is going into where Dick Smith was at Queensgate Lower Hutt
DjShadow:I noticed a while back Bed Bath and Beyond moved into the old Dick Smith store in Owens Place at Mt Maunganui. Must have a good deal

The Johnsonville store is now Warehouse Stationery.
The shop at Hornby is still empty, it used to be my shop as the Civic before the exorbitant mall rent (and struggling DVD industry) forced our shift to smaller premises in 2010. They combined 3 shops at that time to accommodate Dick Smith. Its an odd sized / location for a shop in a mall, outside entrance only, no internal access to the mall, about 350-400sqm, so too big for a small retailer but not nearly big enough for a JB or the like. They probably need to put it back as 3-4 shops at 100sqm each or so, but with limited foot traffic (not directly at the entrance) they are likely to struggle to fill even those. Could suit a bar of sorts, but Hornby isn't short of those and I don't think the mall would like having on premises alcohol.
Bed bath and beyond took over the DS site in Palmy Nth.
Blenheim store is still empty... it sits in between a local electronics retailer and Harvey's.
Noel Leeming took over the DSE store in Takapuna, Recently has been ram raided lol.
It has plywood doors and a security guard parks his car across the entry every evening. Its been like that for weeks. Maybe its had a few raids?
