Never trust anyone that has only spent a maximum of a week in a car. Normally on nice roads.

I recall this same conversation happening many months back! If I recall correctly, that was the previous gen 6 you're trashing?! I've got one of the current range which is, I'll admit, not terribly quiet (the mid-version revamp is supposed to be quieter though), but I'm completely happy with its comfort levels.

It was, and the reason for never buying another mazda ever. Plenty of other cars for us to choose from.

I stick by "never trust anyone etc..."

Unless they are out there putting 1000+ kms on that car in a week, they have no idea what the downsides of it are.

Fair enough if you're never going to do a road trip, but if you spend more than 2 hours (actually moving) in a car in a day, you want to know what it will be like like in a month.

Darn! That rules out every car review there is!

Luckily I buy based on power:weight ratio + torque curve + 4WD / price ....

I had the 2015 Mazda6 'Limited' Sedan for a month to review in December 2015 (where it was the holidays and lots of KMs get put on it during that month), and even drove it from Auckland to Wellington and back. Car was very spacious for four people, plus two day's worth of luggage in the boot. My passengers and I thought that the ride was smooth, and road noise was okay. It was diesel and the whole 8-900km trip costed about $50-60 on fuel!

HAHAHA... Word of mouth, car forums, with a few reviews thrown in for good luck (and to complete the WAF).

I just buy based on BMW tongue-out

Now that's how to review a car!

I love the Mazda 6, a friend has a wagon, I didn't notice it being particularly hard riding or loud either. I think the 6 and the Mondeo are possibly the best looking "rep" mobiles about. I do a lot of k's in rental cars, so have a fair idea what I like. A Toyota Highlander was tremendous fun to drive, but, oh man did it use some gas. It did refuse to slow down go up Arthur's Pass which may have had something to do with it...

I'm surprised your passengers didn't barf all over the hard seats ... that thing leans like wild grass every time you touch the steering wheel!

Are you talking about the Mazda, Mondeo or Highlander?

Highlander. I rented one - very powerful. But don't try to turn it .... doesn't do roundabouts either.

Aren't the Toyota Highlanders the same as a Toyota Kluger in Australia? If so, I rented a Kluger when I was in the Gold Coast and yes it did use a bit of fuel (fuel wasn't expensive in Aus), but I found it quite nice and easy to drive, and even reversed park into a pretty tight undercover carpark with ease!

Just to update this. As I returned the Camry I asked what it would cost to buy. After all I've effectively owned since new, serviced every 15,000km etc.
They said $17,000 so I've bought it. So it will be fit for purpose for two years.

Now, talk to me about fuel cards, obviously the cheaper the fuel, the more I save. I've looked at Z for airpoints, they do 6c per L off and 11c off at truck stops. Has anyone used truck stops, I assumed they would just be diesel?

They should have a list of service stations that are counted as "truck stops".
